Have liked Avast cos of the email virus detection.

AVG Free provides email virus scanning too, I believe.

Avast work well with the old Sygate firewall, Comodo in my experience is a bit more modern but a bit more bloated and yes not working very well with Avast.

I found the combination of Avast + Sygate + Window defender to be the list resource hogger for my machine (Pentium D 2.66). Probably better to remove the software firewall if you have a firewall in your router (if you have one oc).

  • Tried to clean install avast 4.8 without comodo on the system.

PC crashed again after 2 minutes. Removed Avast.

Have now run the processes in the malware spyware removal guide. Wow Browntoa wasnt wrong about the time it would take. Started in the afternoon and finished in the wee hours of the morning.

Have found one trojan smitfruad variant, load of tracing cookies and some other windows tray issues. Have now cleaned these.

However AdAware 2007 just crashes the PC (in safe boot) again about 2 minutes into the scan. So couldnt run this. Any thoughts

As it was so late I couldnt test the system so I will get going again tonight when I get home. Will have an update soon.

Thanks for all of your help. Billy
  • Just got back and installed Avast, pc crashed again. I have no removed and will try online scanners as per 2nd part of Browntoa's removal guide, will keep you all posted.

Any thoughts on whats gone on so far??

You installed and ran A squared?

If you're running a netgear router, you probably have a hardware firewall - is that the case?

  • No havent run A Squared, just the programs specified in Browntoas malware sticky, superantispyware, Adaware, ccleaner, windows defender, spybot search and destroy.

Am currently running a panda active scan (taking ages, has already found 3 infected files.

    Am running an Orange livebox.

    Cheers Billy
  • Here is the log from the Panda scan

  • Next update.

Have installed AVG this morning. PC seems stable with it running in background however I have tried a system scan twice with the following results.

A couple of minutes into the scan and pc crashes with BSOD

    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

    stop: 0x00000050 (0xE13CB000, 0x00000000, 0x8056B9AC, 0x00000001)

Its now officially 2 weeks since I have been trying to sort this out and am almost giving up.

I may try the online panda and trust micro scans again.
