My dad used to make quite big carrot shaped holes witha dibber(??) and fill it with really fine sieved soil. His carrots were normal shaped but not as interesting as yours.
I did that with my parsnips last year and it worked well. I also added a bit of sand into the soil because we have heavy clay.

Ciara - your plot looks great. Looks like you get plenty of food out of your space.

we have an allotment and have just bagged £58 cash prize money at the local horticultural show, and £44 of that was what the kids won in novelty classes like a tray garden, face made of vegetables! There is big prize money for giant onions, leeks etc (like £100 first prize) but we just grow for fun and to supplement our weekly shopping. If you have a local show its worth getting the schedule and looking what you have to offer.
That sounds great. Unfortunately our local church show is dominated by one or two semi professional growers and their poly tunnels. None of us ordinary folk get a look in.

As for the cake and jam catergories, well they don't even taste them before they award the prizes:rolleyes:

Very strange and not much fun. Your's sounds much better.

The EU have been trying ban irregular shaped vegetables for years so it's good to see the real things,

Aren't the irregular shaped vegetables MEPs?

I would lodge a complaint with the organisers for next year and ask for more sections, or/ and banning the semi pros on the grounds they win everything!!

Well I've just opened a letter from my local show's organiser asking for help as a number of the committee have died!!
Last year when i was entering the woman said I was 20 years too young for this - I guess that's a good thing, not ready to drop off the peg yet!!

Saveit - lovely cucumbers and well done for such a marvellous crop. My outdoor plants this year have been very disappointing. I grow the Patio variety (mini cucumbers). Last year I picked more than we could eat from two plants. This year I've had barely half a dozen. Do you grow yours in a greenhouse?

Primrose I grew them on the windowsil of my conservatory this year, my greenhouse finally bit the dust and I hadn't got round to getting another one.
I thought I would grow some cu's, tomatoes and peppers. its been my best ever crop of everything , I think thats because I am always in the conservatory and they have had extra care. I did put some of the tomatoes outside as soon as it became warm enough , but those ones haven't been as good. I picked a lot of peppers yesterday and froze them , we do a lot of stir fries so chopping them all up seemed sensible, I kept giving them away to anyone that called. lol
I have some chillies on the go but they have been poor, its my first time at growing them , I think I did something wrong? not sure what but each plant has only one chillie.
