Abbey Instant Access Saver - silence from their end

I opened an account with them on the internet 2 weeks ago (at least, I think I did!) and have heard nothing since.

Has anyone any experience with this account and how long it takes them to process initial applications?

They're in a class of their own. The Observer say they have more complaints about Abbey than all the other banks put together.

Opening an account might be the easiest bit. I tried to close an e-Saver 3 weeks ago after having too many problems with them to list. After speaking to people in 4 different offices was told by a pillock in their complaints dept last week that it was now all sorted out. Still nothing happened. Today was told the process hadn't been started but would happen within 5 working days. That will be a month if it happens.

When I opened the account after taking passport and council tax bill into a branch for ID and having them confirm they had it they froze my account without notification. They claimed it was because they hadn't had the ID.

Even the manager of the local Abbey branch said privately he wouldn't have his current account with them. They've got serious problems.

I read somewhere the other day that Abbey openly admit to cutting corners on administration to save money! They really are useless. Go elsewhere. You will never look back!

The Abbey have to be the worst bank - they are a total joke. In 2003 after selling a property I banked £193,000 and was not given proper advice. I was advised by a branch manager to put it in a branch saver. I was not asked about how many withdrawals I was likely to make and later a counter assistant told me it was most definately the wrong account for me and I had lost a fortune in interest due to withdrawals I needed to make - funds were then transferred to a different account - but I lost a fortune in interest. Does anyone know if I would still have a claim against them.
More recently (Sept. 2007) After selling a flat, my solicitor transferred cleared funds to the Abbey - the money was MISSING for 23 days - I later used a solicitor to pursue for loss of interest but they refused to accept any liability. With they ABBEY far from being a customer - you are not even a number - in short THEY SIMPLY DON'T GIVE A DAMN. The foregoing is only 2 of dozens of major blunders the Abbey have mader and they NEVER accept any liability - I guess they just have too many customers SO GO ELSEWHERE.

I applied April 30th for Instant Access Saver. Received an email this morning saying account had been set up and details would follow by post.

Other experiences with Abbey are not so good. I handed in an application for the fixed rate monthly saver at the local branch with my id. They checked the forms and photocopied the id there and then, but I heard nothing for 6 weeks. So I went back to the branch, who couldn't find the application. They supected that an employee who had been off sick 'for a few weeks' might have been dealing with it. To be fair, they then opened the account on the spot (I had id with me).

However, why didn't they open the account on the spot when I first called in ? Does nobody deal with the work of absent employees ? etc etc ...

    As does the Sunday Times
They are definitely on my "Never, ever, ever deal with them again, even if the offer rates 10% above the next best" list.

Wow, flabberghasted... I've got a personal & business account & have never had any trouble with my personal one except when I changed my surname & then it seemed they didn't understand what changing a surname was!

Business account - I was told it'd been refused & my cheque to open the account (my personal cheque to my own business account) had been returned to me in the post because I couldn't open the business account. A few days later & without warning or confirmation, I get my new business account cards, cheque book & paying in books & welcome pack & later on, the cheque I wrote to myself cleared causing me to go over my overdraft limit!

Apart from these - can't fault Abbey!
