dell.co.uk, you should be able to specify most of the things you want

or try dmxdimension.com or co.uk they will show you the lastest deals on dell pc's and laptops

I would go for a 17 to 19 inch screen don't really need anything bigger.
Make sure the mother board has the lastest graphics card slot PCI-E you dont need to worry about this if you getting it custom made.
You would probably wouldn't need anything bigger than a 120gb( maybe even a 80gb) hard driver unless you download lots of movies music photos ect.
If you want the latest cpu go for a quad core 64 bit computer but other wise go for a dual core 64 bit. Get about 2-4 gb of ram in your computer.I would get around a 512mb graphics card. Sound card doesn't matter that much unless you want the full cinema experience. Make sure it has a Dvd player which can read both + and - most do these days anyway.
If you want the easy but not always cheaper way you can get a custom computer:

With no specific requirements other than a home PC I'd probably suggest something along the lines of

Lower end Core 2 Duo processor (e.g. Intel E2180 2ghz)
    500gb hard drive
    2gb DDR2 memory
Low end graphics card (e.g. an ATI HD3450)
    Onboard sound

Dell will allow you a degree of customisation with their PC's.

It could work out cheaper to buy. Use www.dmxdimension.com to find the best current dell deals. Also check out www.hotukdeals.com and search for dell

I wouldn't go with Dell because they'll charge you a fortune for the mods you make.
Plus you may get non-standard components on some machines.

What you're after is a generic machine.

I would go with a decent local pc maker.
No such thing as future proof, but if all the components are standard, you can chop and upgrade as you find better component options.

You'll lose out on price but gain on choice. (Isn't that what the politicians say? - oh dear)

https://www.komplett.co.uk are OK for speccing the machine you want. Pick one of their standard ones and then change the bits you want.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

I recommend ebuyer (https://www.ebuyer.co.uk) and scan (https://www.scan.co.uk) for parts to build your own.
