Heelys - help please!!

DS & DD have both requested Heelys for their birthdays this summer.

Does anyone have any advice on size etc. I'm sure I've read somewhere that they "come up small" - not sure which size to buy?

:confused::confused:

Also 1 or 2 wheels - does it make a difference?

Thanks!

When my 5 year-old was asking for heelies, I was against it (have seen many children fall over and been hurt - whereas they would wear pads/helmet if riding bikes, roller-blades etc.), but my wife was in favour.

In the end, my wife persuaded me to buy the trainers that have wheels built-in to the sole of the heel (only one wheel in each trainer). They have a button on the back of the trainer that allows the wheel to be fully retracted into the trainer. That way the trainers can be work with or without the wheels.

I actually don't mind them so much now.

Yes. She has fallen over, but kids fall over whatever. She doesn't go very fast in them (unlike roller-blades etc.) so any falls are usually trips, and therefore relatively minor.

    Cheers,
    Don

My eldest DD has some Heelys' and they're great. She has the ones with one wheel on each shoe, which is located under the heel. They do come up a bit small, DD1 is normally a size 1 so we bought a size 2 and they're fine.

DD (10) has some, loves em. I think its worth spending the extra and getting proper Heelys though as a few friends have commented how the cheaper ones tend to snap at the wheel posts.

I'd also go for 1 wheel. 2 are great for learning, but they soon get fed up and want 1 wheel. Took my DD about an hour to master it fully, but she's brilliant on them now.

please for the love of god make sure if you kids have to wear these, don't let them use them indoors.

Sick and tired of being bumped into by kids on these things in shops and then the parents give me a filthy look, i'm a mother but i swear the next child that does that to me will be tripped up

my DD broke her arm very badly last summer on them resulting in pins in her arm.

Sorry for the negative post but the 3hour theatre stint nearly sent me bonkers with worry!!!

my daughter has asked me if she could have another pair with 2 wheels as she says they are safer but I am not convinced.

Must admit I don't like them.

I hate the fact they are not walking properly on them when the wheels are in.

That said my DD is very responsible with hers. Initially she had a cheapo pair and to be honest they didn't last. Got her a pair of proper heely's for her birthday and they are certainly much better quality.

The advice I got was to go 1 size bigger than their shoe size. Seems to have worked ok and they're lasting quite a long time too really.

But in fairness kids do this on skateboards, rollerskates or even just running around.

I'm another bad Mum who won't let my DD had these. I just feel they're not good for the achilles heel area.

When my DD does rollerblading or cycling she wears a helmet and any other elbow pads etc. necessary, but I've not seen anyone in heelys wear a helmet or elbow/knee pads yet.

sorry to put a downer on it.:o

my DD asked me for heelys and..
    I said NO NO NO

They are dangerous and especially a nuisance when they are being used by people with their kids in supermarkets (i work in one and have nearly been knocked down a few times by heely wearing kids)

Roller skates are better because they are ONE thing, JUST roller skates, whereas heelys are in the no mans land of not really shoes, not really skates, just really irritating.

i quite agree - i think these things should be banned in shops and shopping centers and other public indoor places. kids going about bumping in to things and people, damaging the flooring with this insane footwear fad:mad: its just rude - i'm sure most parents would not let their kids wear these things around their own houses!
