Homemade Sushi?

  • sushi vinegar/seasoning usually already has sugar and salt added to it. I always use the pre-mixed stuff - life's too short! ;)

As for sushi-grade fish. I believe that it is standard to FREEZE your fish (carefully, to avoide freezer-burn!) to kill off any parasites etc before use in sashimi/sushi. I also heard somewhere that most of the fresh fish you see in the fish counter etc will already have been frozen once before being sold.
  • Does anyone know where to get the Lakeland sushi press from, or something similar ? It's the rolling process that worries me so this seemed fab, but they don't seem to stock it anymore ...
  • Wow what an inspiration this thread has been - Thanks Everyone!
I've recently taken to buying ready-made sushi from Mr T's - but never gave a thought to making my own till now. I watched the videojug about making maki (cucumber & rice etc) ordered a mat and basic ingredients online on Monday - they arrived today (Weds) and I've just made the best sushi I've tasted in a long time! OK my efforts were a bit butch and not as delicate looking as most - but the taste was all there. Hopefully I'll get better. I used stuff I had lurking in the fridge as fillings - cucumber, onion egg etc - Fantastic - thats got me started now. I kept my hands very wet, wrapped the mat in clingfilm, used a sharp wet knife to cut and fanned the rice with a plastic tub lid. It all worked!

Well Ive finally got round to trying to make my own sushi and have to say it was a great success!

I found it easy to make and it looks great (even though i say it myself :j) Im really pleased with my efforts, also Hubs has tasted it and said that it tastes great - just like the expensive shop brought packs you get.

Ive only made terriaki chicken ones so far, Im going to make some veggie ones today.

Guess whats hubs is taking to work for lunch every day from now on!! A good cheap lunch once you buy the bits as the vinegar etc last for some time and I only used 1 cup of rice :money:

I make sushi all the time for my kids lunches and they love it!!

Asda sell the seaweed and rice at half the price of anywhere else I found it £1.59ish for 5 sheets seaweed.

favourite fillings tuna mayo, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, all with pepper, cucumber or avocado. If I'm pushing the boat out I get a little jar of lumpfish caviar. This is little bright blue eggs which the kids go MAD for and it makes the sushi extra pretty :D
