  • Good luck, I am sure that you will have loads of fun. And supermarket sushi is not that good anyway, so you may find that even your beginner's effort produces better results.

I forgot to tell you that the sushi making kit is called "Sushi Magic" - it is, in essence, one rubber mat with handles and a plastic nigiri form. Even though it is not authentic, it is worth looking at it, as lots of frustration from people just starting to make rolls comes from rice sticking like glue to a bamboo mat.

Also, someone has pointed out that there is a video presentation online on "videojug" how to make sushi rice, which is rather good. Like with general cooking, you will probably want to experiment with the amount of vinegar you put, some people like less, some more.
Definetely let us know how you went, and don't get discouraged if it is not perfect the first time around. It will still be very good, I am sure!
  • I forgot to add, when cutting the rolls, make sure that the knife is wet. If convenient, just run some water over it (and shake the excess water off) or keep a wet towel nearby to wipe the knife with before each slice.
The rolls are sometimes hard to cut as the knife catches the sticky rice and drags it, but the wet knife ensures smooth and easy cut.
  • I saw some pretty helpful videos on videojug about making sushi. might be worth taking a look on there...
  • I spent many times shopping in Tesco and looking at the Sushi making stuff and thought i should give it a go, well one day i plucked up the courage to get the stuff and have a go!
Well i was amased how easy it was to make, and how lovley it tasted!
even one of my kids loved the salmon ones i made, bar the seaweed.

Well with the bottles of vinegar and saki they will last for quite a while the ric3e packet will do 2 lots, so only need to regualry buy the salmon (88p for value bits) or what ever fillings you want so its good value!

I do need to have some time to check out the oriental supermarket that has opened up in town to see what they have!

  • Just make sure that the fish is super fresh if eaten raw.
Most supermarkets sell fish that is expected to be cooked, but is not always fresh enough to be eaten raw.

It may not affect some people with strong immune system, but for kids and perhaps old people, especially if they are feeling a bit under weather and their immune system is weakened, it may cause food poisoning if there is even the slightest trace of bacteria on the fish.
That's why supermarkets can never tell you that their fish is "sushi grade", because it is not fresh enough for eating raw. It does not mean it is not fresh for consumption, but to be eaten raw, it has to be fresh on the day, or not to have sat around for a couple of days after being thawed.

A tip : Fish Markets are traditionally closed on a Monday, so most fish sold on Monday, whether in supermarkets or at fishmongers, is from Saturday, or from earlier on in the week and then frozen. So, perhaps, avoid buying fish for sushi on Mondays (it is O.K. for frying and cooking), but for eating raw wait for Tuesday for fresh supplies.
And it is perhaps a good idea to develop a good relationship with the fishmonger or the fish counter person in the shop, so they tell you when the fish is super fresh, and when it is not.

Would basmati rice work? I've recently cooked some of this rice on my rice cooker and it came out really sticky so I wondered if it would be ok to make sushi with?

    Thanks

no, it really isnt' sticky enough! Sushi rice is as sticky as glue.

Mix some cooked veg in your basmati, shape in small balls or cakes, roll in breadcrumbs and bake.
