  • there's a new cookbook from yo sushi i've seen in shops, it looks great, explains a lot, also lots of other japanese dishes like noodles, fish (cooked too!), rice, chicken. looks like it's pretty easy too!

  • I find the single most difficult thing about makign Japanese food is buying the ingrediants. I mean, where DO you buy Ponzu, or Daikon, or snow crab, or Monkfish liver? (Actually I think my local Chinese Supermarket sells Daikon but you get the picture).

I've got a couple of really nice Japanese cookbooks but can make almost nothing from them, even if you really go to town with substitution ingrediants.

Not sure if this is the right board-anyway-my daughter likes making sushi and i thought i might get her a sushi set from lakeland.however on looking at it,its not worth the money, and she has managed without so far. What ingredients could i put into a gift basket for a sushi gift,ie which ingredients. I could probably find a suitable ethnic supermarket not too far away.Thought i would also get her a sushi cookery book-Ken Hom?

    Hi there

Do you have an oriental supermarket near you? that would be a great place to start... I have some place mats with chopsticks and the mats are what are used to roll sushi... a bit like the old beach mats... places like au naturel used to have them.
    Soy sauce
wassabi (sp).... like out horseraddish only HOT HOT HOT.. should be able to get that from supermarkets now days..
what about some dipping sauces from the supermarket
    pickled ginger

    hope it is some help

just wanted to add..I just put sushi in google and it came up with all sorts..including recipes..which you could type up and include..lots of ideak on there you can "borrow"

  • If you have an oriental supermarket nearby you can probably get some great basics at reasonable prices - things like packets of nori, bottles of authentic soy sauce, jars of pickled ginger, etc.

You might also get some cheap cooking equipment in there - bamboo mats always look authentic, and cheap dipping dishes or condiment sets are useful for sushi.

And what about packing it all in a cheap bamboo steamer instead of a basket?

I always find that when making up a basket/hamper even a £1 bottle of Pearl River soy sauce can look suitably expensive!

My local Tesco does sushi making stuff now - sushi rice, nori sheets, mirin & japanese rice wine vinegar are all in there. In addition you can get pickled ginger, wasabi & soy sauce to go with it. I bought my bamboo rolling mat from an online shop - http://www.japanesekitchen.co.uk/, I think it was less than £1.
The Japanese say a fan is essential to sushi making as it helps cool the rice down quickly - not sure my tea towel flapping is as effective!

Before you criticise a man, walk a mile in his shoes. Then, when you do criticise him, you're a mile away and you have his shoes.
