Who owns my number???
Ok... here's a tricky one...
I have been with Orange for longer than I care to remember now, and have had 2 lines for almost as long.
I would like to cancel my line2, but keep the number as a pay as you go account so that I don’t loose touch with anyone (and there are too many people for me to tell individually)
Orange say this is not possible... anyone know if it is? And also, I though with the Ofcom Policy on number porting, the customer owns the number, not the provider?
Anyway, any advice would be good.
Many thanks
Rick

I'm no expert on this but i do know there are limitations on porting numbers.
Firstly, porting 'contract to PAYG' or 'PAYG to contract', one way is available but the other isn't. Sorry, can't remember which is which. (things may have changed but i know this was the case a while back).
Secondly, if you're wanting to port the number and stay on Orange i doubt they'll let you. As far as i know all networks do not allow the porting of numbers to the same network (i.e. Orange to Orange, O2 to O2 etc).
Hope this helps0 -
about a year ago I was able to port my number from an O2 contract (which I'd had for 4 years) to Virgin PAYG without any problems so I guess it's the 'contract to PAYG' which is ok to do

When you cancel your contract your number is kept as PAYG as they ask you i know this cos i've had many an orange contract and they have asked me whether i would like a PAYG sim sent out to me with my number. And i have always done so.A true friend will be sat next to you in jail saying "omg that was so much fun" !!!!!!0

I ported a contract O2 number to PAYG O2. Can't see any reason why what you want should be impossible, other than Orange being a pain in the posterior.
If Orange cannot port within the same network, perhaps you can port it off to another network (e.g. buy a PAYG SIM card on eBay - about £1), and then back to Orange. Let them know this is what you will be doing, and then if they were pretending they can't port Orange to Orange when in reality they can, they might back down.0 -
When you say you have 2 lines, do you mean two separate phones or you have the Orange Line 2 service on the same phone?0

orange have changed my number from orange contract to orange payg in the past when my contract has expired. wasnt line2 though if that makes any difference0

Try phoning Orange back and asking again. sometimes you might get somebody who gets it wrong and then somebody who gets it right,0

When you want to move your number within the same network it is called Migration .
Porting is only where you are moving your no from one network to another. By the way there is no requirement for the recieiving network to do it.EG Virgin will not accept ports from 3.Some new mobile contracts also specifically say you cant port your number to them.0 -
My hubby has been on Orange for years, and he was on Contract, then PAYG, then now back on contract, all with the same number, so i dont see why Orange are saying that they cant do it.
Call then up again, and hopefully you'll get someone who know what they talking about.0 -
Have you taken an upgrade in the past 12 months? If so they will expect you to finish another 12 months (from time of upgrade) before you can cancel your contract.0
