I found a recipe for "Student Soup" - boil up a chopped onion or potato (both if you're rich) and add a tomato ketchup sachet stolen from a burger bar. Cheap but nasty soup! ::)

I see what bogof_babe means - lots of cheap recipes assume you've got a cupboard full of basic staples like cooking oil, spices etc. Food like pasta and tinned tomatoes are cheap, but a bit boring without herbs or garlic.

One solution could be economy savoury noodles - the noodles themselves contain some fat (we all need at least some fat) and they include their own little flavouring sachet. They do cost a bit more than plain economy pasta, but they are tastier.

I'm going to try to find a one person menu that includes five portions of fruit and veg. The hardest part is breakfast - I can't think of anything filling that doesn't have to be bought in big packs, like bread or cornflakes.

I'll be good and not suggest anything that involves stealing from McDonalds ;)

    Bacon
Trim visible fat. Dry fat. Serve with pasta, onions, cheap vegetables and tinned sweetcorn or baked beans to make a quick 2 pot meal.

Right, here goes. I checked Asda online for the prices of Smartprice items, the price of fruit and veg is an educated guess, apologies if I'm out by a few pennies! I tried to include veg, fruit, protein, dairy and carbohydrate.

This should feed two adults for a day:

    2 yogurts: 16p
    banana: 10p
    carrot: 5p
    onion: 5p
    tin toms: 18p
    meatballs: 18p
    noodles: 8p
    jelly: 18p
    orange: 10p
small potato if there are any pennies left

Breakfast: yogurt each with banana slices
Lunch: Soup made with half the onion, grated carrot, potato, the juice from the tomatoes and the flavour sachet from the noodles
Dinner: tinned meatballs cooked with the remaining tinned tomatoes and onion, served on the boiled noodles
Pud: jelly made with peeled orange segments

You could skip the jelly in favour of more fruit or veg.

I'm quite tempted to try this out, but Him Indoors would throw a sulk!

I found the Beyond baked beans site quite good. It is aimed at getting students to eat 'proper' food but anyone on a budget can use it. It usually has seasonal recipes on.

I have even found THIS recipe, which is VEGAN too (so it'll fit in another thread on here) under £1 per head, serves 4 though (under £4 total but I suppose you could 1/4 the ingredients and make it for under £1)

where do you buy your frozen mash cathy?
    cheapest I've found is 79p
I agree it tastes much better than instant
but what you save on boiling water you spend on using microwave and milk

    hiya,

just to let you know my safeway/morrisons has bags of mash for 59p, 2 for a £1. don't know if you have one of them near you,

    hth,

    How about Tuna Casserole?

    1 cheap packet spaghetti (19p)
1 tin tuna (as cheap as poss) (50p)
1 packet of cream of mushroom soup mix (30p)

Cook spaghetti, drain and place into casserole dish. drain tuna and add to spaghetti. Make up soup mix using only half the water (becomes the equivilent of those condensed soups) and stir into the spaghetti and tuna. If you have any scraps of cheese lurking then top casserole with this. Pop into oven until warmed through or cheese melting and golden.

Can be eaten hot or cold so would make 2 good meals for 2 people.
