Convert FAT32 to NTFS

I have a Acer T180 dual core and want to convert my d:\ drive to NTFS. However when I run cmd, it comes up with c:\documentsandsettings\myusername> and I cannot change this. Am I just to put CONVERT D: /FS:NTFS after this, or do I need somehow to change the first c:\ to d:\?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Try right-clicking on My Computer > Manage > Disk Management > right-click on D: partition and Format to NTFS

or, come to think about it...

Right-click on the D: in My Computer and Format to NTFS.

No need for a command prompt, just goto
    start, run and type in
    convert c: /fs:ntfs
    Ok
You will be prompted to reboot.
You cannot convert back to fat32 without rebuilding the machine, I take it that you need the security options?

    Yes.

If the data is important, and you have disk space, back it up to c or an external drive just in case.

This is not a showstopper, it is just the Current Directory for the command prompt, and it will always start there, unless you change it in the properties of the command prompt shortcut. Once you have the command prompt open, you can change it using the cd command. Try:
    cd c:\

Yes, provided convert is included in your path. I suppose you think you want to change the prompt to d:\? If that is the case, it is a really bad idea to have your current directory on a file system which you are changing.

Yes it is d drive I need to convert. So as I understand it in 'run' I can just type "convert d: /fs:ntfs"?

Right-click on the D: in My Computer and Format to NTFS.

Thank you Darkfibre - you are helping me again so soon! If I do this, do I leave allocation size at default and do I check the boxes for either "quick format" or "enable compression" please?

Haha must be your lucky day!

Just check 'quick format' and OK...

If there is any important data on it, or restore partitions, you don't want to format.
