Some calls missed by dialler -

I've been using the Orchid Dialler and although over 400 calls went through 18185 at around £70 4 calls did not and cost over £100 through BT. Is there a way to block International calls through BT and would this allow the dialler to continue?? Has anyone else come across this problem?

cheers

My Orchid program routes all calls starting with 00 via 18185 at all times. If you have a similar Routing rule, I can't see how a call can have gone out on BT unless someone unplugged the Orchid box.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • hmm... well I've only got one line at the house with 4 cordless phones but somehow they managed it. Has this never happened to you? there are A LOT of calls though so it isn't that unexpected but the £100 + bill from BT was....

I believe there is a very slim possibility that calls are not routed at all if a very quick redial is done (Orchids take a second or two to reset). I always leave the tariff announcement on so I should be aware if that happens (not that it ever has to me).

Of course, someone could have used the 121 Orchid override code but why I cannot imagine.

BT has a Calling Feature which can be used to bar International Calls - £1.75/month. By default, that also bars 09 dialling but that can be switched off.

Hang on, you are talking about a V4 or V4 Plus Orchid aren't you?

  • I've contacted BT to find out times as their site isn't showing much at the moment. I'll compare it against my 18185 bill and find out if there were a lot of calls and perhaps you are right may have redialled quickly - I'll tell him to wait for the tariff message

    Thanks Heinz

    Checkout old thread .....

I still suffer from the occasional mis-routed call.

It seems to happen mostly when the phone has not been used for some time, after say a week or so when I have been away from home.

But also had it happen completely random, fortunately I have a logger on my line which clearly shows the dialler routing failure.

I have now used the override code for all calls to the USA, forcing the call through 18185 at all times.
Failure to route my USA calls would cost more than the dialler, most calls lasting 1 to 2 hours !

I have been using the Hienz program for nearly a year and no calls have ever gone through BT unless I wanted them to.

I also leave the tariff announcement on, maybe that would slow the redial?

    What is that?

Can you tell me more about it.
  • Yes, I'm interested in this logger. So far 4 little mistakes cost £110 + ! so much more than the dialler

If you look in the old thread noted in post #6 you should find a link to the manufacturers site and instruction manual.

The logger is for use with the USA telephone system, it will not log incoming calls, I believe the USA caller ID data format differs from the UK standard. Because of this the time clock has to be set manually... Used with the USA phone system the clock is set by the first incoming caller ID data.
You will also require a USA/UK phone adapter, or UK connection lead. I used an old UK modem cable.

Logging of outgoing calls never fails, still using the original batteries installed in 2005.

You can find them on Ebay USA, also a number of suppliers throughout USA.... about £26 plus expensive postage.... unless you got friends/ family in the USA.

Search for "Phone Manager" and/or "ER-4000"

Be wary of depending 100% on the tariff announcement, I have found that it sometimes fails to announce, or if the recipient answers immediately you do not receive the message... Think the tariff message is announced during the first ring.
This is all very easy to checkout using the logger
  • Thanks, I've noticed the message isn't always said at the start of calls. I'm looking at installing a VOIP system as he should be able to get his Thailand calls for £0.00 / per minute no connection with VOIP discount. Perhaps VOIP would be more reliable too.
