Unlocking Motorola Phones

I have searched for some time on the web and come to the conclusion that my locked Orange Motorlola V220 is only unlockable by someone with the right piece of kit.

Firstly, can anyone prove me wrong?

Secondly, if I'd know this before I got it I would have chosen something else (probably a Nokia)

Lastly, an interesting experience I had on the Orange shop :
me = "How much would you charge me to unlock my Motorola V220?"
lady in shop = "Oh, you can get that done on the market for much less than we would charge you"

Honest I suppose!

Do any other Motorola users have experiences to relate?

there is a bit of software out there to unlock these but by the time you have bought the cable it is easier to pay the bloke at the boot fair on Sunday £10 to do it for you

Even I pay for these to be unlocked

I unlocked my V220 using the mini usb cable for my PDA. This site here http://forums.afterdawn.com/forum_view.cfm/132 has a tutorial for it and check out the Motorola Hackers Bible. You may need to do some searching for the software which I believe is called Mobile Phone Tools, but it is all explained on there. It can be done with a little patience.

Could it be p2k manager? i used that to flash my v600 and remove unwanted stuff.

Totally agree, waste too much time looking around for the kit. If it isn't on one of the free unlocking sites i'd go down the local market.

The guy i use in Leeds Market charges between £5 - £10 for unlocking all phones. Much easier than searching round for hours on end for a deal that's just not there.

This works fine, if your software version is R364 and you have p2k drivers installed.

i think it will only work for v220 and v80 sorry although i can unlock the v550 for you by post if you want to cover the postage

That's damned reasonable of you! I've got to sort out the purchase of it first though. I'm thinking very long and hard about getting it from Boots phone, but I am waiting for them to reply to my email telling me whether or not I can Port my number in. If I get one I'll be in touch!
