I hope that this is an okay place to put this thread.
I really do not know what to do. When we moved into our property in September I noticed that there were still quite a few wasps milling about in the street. In october there were wasps all over the place in our back garden and around the front of the house. In January we found two wasps nests. One in our garage and one inside the wall in our smallest bedroom. We got rid of the nests and did a check of all the property looking for any others but found none.
Now the sunnier weather is here the wasps are back. We have checked and we have no more nests and I cant really tell where they are coming from. They are all over the street and seem to come from a bush (its quite big probably more like a tree) at our end of the street in our neighbours driveway. We live in a cul-de-sac and we are the last but one house and the bush is right by us.
The neighbour who owns the bush is a council tenant, he is not the nicest person to deal with and I dont feel like I can approach him about this especially as I cannot really tell that they are coming from there.
What should I do? I dont want anymore nests but the wasps are all over the place. If we have the windows open they get inside (yesterday we had 4 fly in in the space of an hour).
If I call the council will they do anything? I cant even tell them for definate where they are coming from and its not like they are in a big swarm or anything. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Try speaking to the council and let us know what they say.....tell them the wasps are terrorising anyone who walks past the bush and that they're getting into the house - have any of your neighbours had the same problem, maybe they could contact the council too......
We had a terrible wasp problem last year and we never really got to the root of the problem, even with the windows closed they were still getting into the house (I think they've nested in the roof / loft) and I had to tape all the air vents up because I think they were coming through them.
Good luck !0 -
Call the council and make a big deal out of it, if someone in your street gets stung and has an anaphylactic reaction it could be very serious.
I'm sure they will do something as its a matter of public safety and they have there own pest control department to deal with this kind of thing.

I'm not sure they can exterminate all wasps? And I don't think the council could be held responsible unless someone with a potential reaction lived in the vicinity. Even then they probably can't be held liable.0 -
Call your local environment health officer - they come and exterminate the wasps, remove the nest & put down a fine powder that stops them from returning.
All for free!!Treat others as you would like to be treated :A0 -
Firstly, wasps will not nest in the same nest twice.
Council's have different policies on pest control. Our council refers you to a commercial pest control company, no more free service.
I remember years ago getting rid of wasps nests in the ground by waiting until after dark, pouring a pint of paraffin down the hole and putting a brick over the hole.0 -

Mine must be special homing wasps then I've the same gang for 3 years running..I didn't say the same nest i said the same area......as in the very same corner of my garden they always use.
I think they like me.!:D'Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship'. -Benjamin Franklin.0 -
Thanks everyone for your replies. I am mainly worried about my dogs as they love to run about in the garden but as the wasps are always out there I feel like I have got to keep them away. The cat also chased one yesterday and caught it in its mouth and started carrying it around with the back end of it hanging out of his mouth. Thankfully he was not stung but it gave me quite a fright.
I am going to contact the council and see what they say.0 -
It's still a bit early in the season for wasps to be such a problem.
If the wasps are causing problems for you, they must surely be causing problems for the person who owns the land where their nest(s) is(are)."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -

They're out in full force where I live !
I'd heard that petrol fumes also gets rid of them, but then that poses it's own dangers so I wouldn't recommend dousing your neighbours bush in petrol (not at the current prices anyhow)0
