Birth Certificate

Hi, my sister had her handbag stolen, which contained all her personal details including her passport (expired) birth certificate (long story) Now, how does she go about getting replacement ones? She was adopted as a child, and all we know is that she was born in London. So complicated, so please ask any questions, if it will help me to get these for her (would like to take her to France for a break)
Many Thanks

She needs to contact the registration office where the birth was registered ,I believe it can be done online now too, once she has that she can apply for a new passport, application packs for the passport are available from the post office ,or can be downloaded online too0

depending on how old she is, she could contact a social services adoption team (in london), who should be able to do a search for her and retrieve her personal file, enabling her to get a copy of her birth certificate (which should be kept with her adoption records)Give blood - its free0

if she was legally adopted, along with the adoption certificate (certified copy of an entry in the adopted children register) the adoptive parents would have been sent a new 'certificate of birth' either the short form which just states new name, sex, dob and place of birth or a full certificate (at a cost) naming the adoptive parents.

full replacement certificates as it states are easily available for adopted people and you can apply on line. hope this helps. i only know cos we are buying in some spares at the moment:)0 -
Thanks for that information Ohheck and thanks for the thread Carmen as it reminded me to send for a copy of my son's birth certificate so he can open a bank account (it was lost when he opened his building society account years ago).
I had to phone in the end as I hadn't got all the required fields for an online application (father's name) but they were very helpful and its all done, dusted and on its way
I didn't realise I didn't have to contact the local office and pleasantly surprised to find the central one open on Saturday mornings

It's not exp to get a copy, i lost my short one and think i paid a fiver about 6 years ago and it was still the same 2 years later when i had to get a long one (mum only got the short) cos my son was born in Middle East.
Hope your sister gets it sorted soon.0 -
Well I got my copy from the national office.
I have a copy as does my daughter, both from local offices, and both look like original birth certificates with copy stated somewhere smallish. Although we got these years ago so maybe practise has changed.
My son's copy from the national office looks like a photocopy and has 'Warning. This is not proof of identity' on it in large print.
I suppose I will have to wait and see if the bank are ok with accepting it as proof of his indentity in opening a bank account

(Just for information - Money Laundering Regs will now only allow a birth certificate to be used as the NAME proof for identity until you are 18yrs old, you still have to provide proof of address, and if you are over 18, then something else must be used. HTH Jo xx)#KiamaHouse0
