    Hi,

probably posted in the wrong place and I shall no doubt get my wrist slapped but I decided that this might be well placed on the GRABBIT section because the items in question will soon disappear once you all read this. Also I suspect it'll get greater readership on here so here goes.

Today I went into Tesco's and purchased some items and in amongst the items that I bought were two packets of weetabix.

When I placed then on the conveyer I noticed one of the boxes were damaged and if you know what weetabix are all about then that would leave only crumbs, I think you would agree. However the box was only damaged in the corner.

"Excuse me!", I said to the checkout girl, "could you get these changed for an undamaged box, please?"

"O.k." she said with a smile, "But would you not prefer to have them for half the price?".

"oh, okay then", I replied and then she went on to explain that it is now the policy of TESCOS to offer damaged items at HALF PRICE because of all of the wastage.

Now I can see a lot of MSEer will suddenly become a little butter-fingered as a result of this but lets hope that we don't completely take the p!!s. It'd be a shame if they stopped this, wouldnt it!

I can see Elvis looking for a broken bottle of scotch, now.

    anyway. Tuck in, you lot.

i spoke to my sister in law who works at wellingborough tesco on the tills and she said the checkout staff are not allowed to reduce damaged items, it's down to the supervisor or checkout manager..
  • I was in asda the other day and one of my loaves had come undone. I hadnt noticed but the till operator asked if id like a replacement. I said no as i will use that loaf first instead of freezing. She did reduce it for me though off her own back which i was quite happy with. :D
    Make £10 a Day Feb .....£75.... March... £65......April...£90.....May £20.....June £35.......July £60
  • I work in tesco's and as far as i know in my store Colney Hatch (N. London) checkout staff arent allowed to reduce any items at all without a managers consent be it damaged or items that are reduced but have a damaged bar code
  • Slightly different Tesco story:

Last time I was standing at a Tesco Customer Service Desk a uniformed but off-duty member of staff was buying her grocery in front of me. She cheekily pointed out a damaged item and insisted the guy behind the counter discount it for her. Don't think they were buddies because the guy said he wasn't allowed to do that because "damaged items are covered by insurance so I can't sell it to you discounted. The store will claim off insurance".

Another example of two members of Tesco staff not knowing their store's policy.
  • The problem with buying damaged tins is there is a risk of microbiological contamination if a pinprick hole is formed which subsequently self-seals and is not obvious. There is consequently a risk of spoilage (which I have seen) and, I believe, even food poisoning. I don't know if modern canning methods reduce the likelihood.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Although we have the reduced price boxes too in all the Tesco stores around here, and things have been better than half price at times, got a box of coconut notion chocolates the other week for 38p. I was going to get some Cadburys hot chocolate drink the other day but the only tub left had a big dent in the side of it and the powder was coming out of it, so I left it, just thought of the mess etc of the powder even when put in a bag etc.

i totally agree ...... but its ok for non edibles ie soap powder like i got half price as long as you have a good idea of how empty or full it is meant to be :D
  • any stores that have the button on the till to allow discounts are having them removed and it will be team leaders and managers only to authorise discounts only and that will be very rarely if ever... and user1234 what is the inference of your comment i may have read you wrong but - all tesco staff dont know every policy, they are trained for their department and store overview - i wouldn't expect the backdoor staff to be aufait with customer service policy - and even if the staff in question were buddies unless he was a manager he wouldn't be allowed to reduce it anyway! if it was an electrical item we send them back for credit so why loose by reducing it.

Asda can give out smiley vouchers up to £1 given certain situations. eg: a certain bottle of wine is not available after you've asked for it - they can give you this 'smiley £1 voucher' off another bottle of wine.

The problem being its down to the collegue and if they feel like being customer friendly..
