As I said in the title, I cannot afford a Panasonic S255 but am desperate to buy a good breadmaker. What does everyone recommend?
You advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
I know other people have success with it, but I really don't recommend the Morphy Richards Fastbake. I never get as good results as my friend does with her Panny. I just can't get a good texture, even though I'm pretty good at baking generally and get good results when I make bread by hand and bake it in the normal oven.

When you say you can't afford an SD255, what is your budget? As that would be a good starting point

OK, well ALL of the Panasonics are meant to be really good - SD252, SD253, SD254, SD255.
It may be that you can pick up one of the pre-SD255 models on ebay for within your budget. I got my SD255 recently on ebay for £60+£9.50 delivery - the earlier models sell for less.

There are pannys on ebay aswell
I have an MR fastbake and really like it, never had a panny to compare it to.One day I might be more organised...........
GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb0 -
I'm borrowing a Swann at the moment which I like, but it seems they don't make the, anymore. It looks like the Breville and AWT breadmaker (neither of which have had good reviews, Breville, poor customer service and AWT generally naff)
I'm looking for one that does 3 sizes of loaf and only has 1 paddle so you only get 1 hole in the bottom of the loaf. I've rad about one whose paddle goes down somehow during the bake cycle so you don't get the hole.
Personally I don't like the look of the Panasonics, too tall (I know that it doesn't matter the way it looks and that only the way it cooks is important)0 -
I had 2 Pannys. Luckily I bought them both from Argos as both broke within 1 week of year being up! I thought it was great but must admit the Morphy Richards is just as good (gave up on the pannys after 2). I did keep one of the recipe books form the Panny and alternate between that book and Morphy Richards. The interesting thing is that both specify a different way to put in ingredients but both work. I paid over £100 for Pannys (hence could return to Argos). I paid £47 for Morphy Richards - prob cheaper now. That was 3 years ago. Anyway. Good luck.0

There's a FastBake on the MR website right now - noticed this on Grabbit a few days ago. It's the white one & it's about £40.0

May be a crazy idea but have you thought of freecycle? I got a panny and put my old breadmaker on freecycle.
You never know, maybe someone has one that they no longer use? Its a good way of trying one out to see how it goes?0 -
I have a MR Fastbake and then bought a Panny when they were on special at Christmas on Amazon - I have to say, to date, my Panny has been a disaster and as a result, I am back using the MR!
I find the Panny cycle is sooo long compared to the MR, plus I have produced more bricks than decent loaves - I have changed all ingredients with little effect, the machine doesn't seem to mix correctly on many occasions and I have followed the instructions to the letter with regard to placing the ingredients in the machine.
I am considering putting it on ebay as I have been so disappointed, but would definitely recommend the Morphy Richards.
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!
