I see this whole situation as a gamble right now, nothing less! I've just switched from a Powergen "variable" rate to capped until January, 2008. Although this is costing me around 10% more than the best "variable" rate available at the moment, I'm gambling on rates going up 20%+ in the next two years or so. I appreciate that the extra 10% paid now will maybe mean a long time (over 1 year?) to see any true benefits, if rates continue to rise, but that's the gamble. The one good point is that if rates go down, there is no penalty/cancellation fee with Powergen (unlike current British Gas 2010 capped rates), and you can just simply switch to a better "variable" rate with them, or someone else. If wholesale/retail prices really go up big time, it should be a good buy (nobody knows how long Powergen will keep the same prices for the current capped rate) and that's why I have jumped in now, with a view to monitoring the situation carefully over the next few months.
