  • We went 2 years ago and could not spend our money as there was nothing to do. Ended up in the casino every night. Local cigarettes are about £2 a pack though you may have to ask store keeper to order them in. Varna was very nice aprt from the beggars. We found a lovely local cafe and we had lunch with alcoholic drinks for around £4. Varna is also much cheaper in supermarkets - we bought luxury chocolates for £1.30 a box in resort they were £3 ish. Local brewed alcohol is very cheap indeed and i can recomend theor brandy - yummy lol. Lots of markets sell imitation clothes too but they are good quality. Dont be put off by what the reps say re buses. We were told not to use them as full of gypsies, beggars etc. We used the buses lots and they wer much cleaner than in the uk and the conducter was very nice too. Very cheap to travel on the buses. As or taxis - do not use them at the price they quote - you can haggle them right down to around half price. Also keep an eye on your bag, purse etc in Varna - loads of pickpockets. Also there are lots of prostitutes around - they dont care who they ask - even men walking with their wives and children get asked. Quite funny really.

Can I just ask Kaydn I had planned to take my first family holiday abroad to Bulgaria Sunny Beach next to a new water park, I was all excited about it because I had chosen an apartment I liked from eBay and had priced my flights up from Manchester, but was disappointed to hear from a few friends not to go to Sunny Beach in Bulgaria and even the travel agent told me she wouldn't recommend Bulgaria.
I was so disappointed, this is going to be our first holiday abroad with two girls ages 6 & 7, now I'm completely confused where to book our holiday, travel agent told me to look into Spain!

What do other people think of Bulgaria? Anywhere in particular that someone would recommend visiting in Bulgaria. Any advice?
Sunny beach is a purpose built resort and as has already been stated is cheap particularly for food and drink there is an area called old nessebar close to sunny beach which is an old town with lots of small shops selling all sorts there are also numerous day trips would reccomend the monster truck day out. I would say look at the discussion forums on Holiday truths ask any more questions there. My opinion is Bulgaria is a good value family holiday destination hope this helps.

I have some apartments near where you have booked and i'm sure you will enjoy yourself. Me and the OH went last year and took £400 between us and that was just about enough and we was SC so £300 should be enough if your AI.

The local currency (levs) is pegged to the euro so has dropped against a little this year but that said it will still be very cheap compared to the rest of europe. This is an article that was in the papers recently about how Bulgaria was no. 1 in a survey by teletext holidays for being the best value holiday destination for 2008.

My brother & his wife went last year because they`d been about 10yrs before and loved it, but not this time. They said the hotel staff were rude, prostitutes kept coming up to him and his wife, food awful etc. When they came home they were both off work for 3weeks because of a stomach infection picked up while there.
Never again he said, they could`nt wait to get home.
I think the travel agent must have heard as well and just being honest.

I've been going now for 3 years and have purchased an apt as I like it that much. Check out: http://www.geocities.com/bellsofstvlas/main.html

Here is a breakdown on the resorts:

Elinete - Not much there but a holiday village type feel but easy to get to other resorts by public bus which is incredibly cheap

St Vlas - My favourite place. Great beaches, watersports, an old style village with great restaurants and most recently a brand new marina with great restaurants. - Well recommended.

Sunny Beach - Its a hive of activity and certainly for the people who like there night life.

Nessebar - Lovely fishing type village and you can catch the ferry to Istanbul from here.

Bourgas Town - Up and coming, cool relaxing and a great place to spend a day or two.

Not that I am interested, but my friend asked whether these ladies were nice, romantic and good-looking. Curious that they were apparently out in the open like this, since I understood that this particular service was controlled by the mafia.

I think the answer they would give you is "I can be as nice & romantic as you want me to be baby":rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
