Additional card holder identity checks

in Credit cards
Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has encountered this from other organisations.
My additional card holder on my Cap One account is my wife, who is a recently arrived foreign national. They are demanding to see identity and address documentation for her.
We have been together some time and she has been added to various credit card accounts over that period - but Cap One are the only ones requiring identity proof. It's also notable that their list of documents from 'List A' (as they put it) for identity is rather stringent - being documents from HMRC/LEA or benefits office (which she doesn't have because she isn't working yet and can't receive public funds) or the council about renting (which she doesn't have because we privately rent!).
Obviously, if they can't accept the documents I'm going to send, then we'll remove her from the account and go back to using our egg money cards.
I'm finding this process rather frustrating and I wanted to find out if I'm the only one struggling here with an additional card holder, who surely shouldn't be having to jump through these hoops!

The lender needs to know whether she has a right to be in the UK - if not then she could spend a lot on your card and disappear.
If you don't like what Capital One want I agree forget about it and use Egg money.0 -
But how would Capital One know she was not a UK Citizen? They dont ask nationality of the prespective addtional cardholder when you apply, well not that I have ever seen. Unless they do a fraud search against the additional cardholders name and the fraud check gives the lender details put on other applications to other financial organisations??
I thought it was always stipulated by others, correcting me, on the board that banks dont do any check on additional cardholders.

Exactly my thoughts James - that's why I'm confused. The agreement is with me - I'm liable for all debts - why does it matter who she is or where she is?0

It's not a matter of not liking what Cap One want - it's a matter of not having it and them being inflexible in what they require (the call centre agent I spoke to told me there was nothing they could do - despite them saying "call us if you're struggling to get these documents and we'll help"). I could understand the inflexibility for a main applicant ... but not an additional holder.
As I said to James - my confusion comes in that it doesn't matter if she disappears or not because the agreement is with me. Even if I was the one to run away - they wouldn't be able to persue her because she hasn't signed the agreement - so I don't get what odds it makes to them.

Well it obviously matters to Capital One to whom you should be asking these questions.0

I got my DS an additional card on my Capital One account and, apart from giving them his name, they did not ask for any other details.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -
To test something out, I put a completely made up name and DOB as an additional card holder on my Capital One application back in January and both cards arrived fine without any questions.

I have had the same from capital one and after about 8 months they are going to withdraw or disable or whatever the additional card because I refused to provide the information without them a) asking nicely and b) telling me why they need it.
The reality is we are all suspected criminals and/or terrorists and the government requires by law all financial institutions to identify their customers sufficiently so the state can monitor, track and associate with an identity every financial transaction. See http://www.out-law.com/page-4141 for reference.
My girlfriend doesn't work, doesn't scrounge from the state, doesn't pay any bills and so apparently doesn't exist enough to be allowed to hold an additional card.0 -
Hi,
I encountered the exact tsame problem & I'm in the process of photocopying the documents they require.
I find it strange that after approx. 6months of use that the query this now. I ignored the 1st request for the info as I though it was dodgy.
I take it it's ok for me to blank out account nos. etc onthe documents I send them?
Cheers0 -
I've had my final 'cut up card' letter because, apparently, I haven't responded to their previous requests.
This is DESPITE the fact I've actually responded to every letter and they sent me back the documents I sent them!
So I've written a letter to their complaints department telling them what I think of the fact they've been ignoring my attempts to resolve it and told them that I don't want to let their card go - but if they force it then I'll leave it dormant until they pay out my cashback.
I'm just hacked off that the letters I'm getting make it sound like I'm the one not doing anything, when in fact I am writing letters and making every effort to comply.
