Need to dispose of a 1970's caravan-help!

My elderly parents have a 1970's caravan on our driveway that needs to be disposed of either by way of sale or scrapping. (Not in a very good state of repair)

I have spoken to a few dealerships who state that due to the windows being glass it is illegal to tow on a road.

I have spoken to our local council (Newport, Gwent, South Wales) who state that it would cost £80 and offer no discount for OAP's.

Can anyone offer any suggestion.

It is no wonder that people dump their rubbish when the cost is so high to dispose of it legally!

  • Freecycle it? You'd be surprised what people will take away...

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor...
  • Try putting an advert up in the local supermarket, or in the local free press.

When I got rid of a delerict caravan for a neighbour the aluminium sheets were worth quite a bit at the scrappy, and the chassis and wheels were taken to be converted into a trailer. While you might find it impossible to sell you will probably find folk glad to take it off your hands.

It isn't illegal to tow a caravan with glass windows on a road. Some people still use the older caravans regularly. After all, a car has glass windows.

Dont caravans need to be tested for safety? Befroe they can be put on the public highway?
  • Caravans do not require an MOT but the buyer will need to ensure that it is roadworthy. He will need to check the brake/indicator lights are working and if it's towed away after lighting up time the other lights as well.

    I've been Money Tipped!
You could always give Jeremy Clarkson a call - perhaps he may do another stunt where they try and shoot the caravan down that's suspended from a crane with old cars as bullets!! ;)
