    Rant alert

They say that in this electronic age, everything should be seamless and wonderful and all can be done over the internet, instantly, in a flash. They lie.

In October 1997, I opened a Tesco Instant access savings account (I think to get the club card points). Since then, I've been bunging the odd cheque here and there into it over the years. It's my rainy day fund. There's just under £9,000 in there now. Having had confirmation today of the date for the installation of my new french doors ( :D 27th May) I decided I might as well draw some of that down to pay the balance.

I thought I could phone Tesco up and ask for a cheque to be made out in the name of the window people and get them to send it to me so it's ready on satisfactory completion.

Oh no - it's not that simple! I was clearly very naive

The call goes something like this.

"Could you let me have your identification number please?"
    "Oh - what's that - I don't think I have one of those?"
"What's your sort code and account number"
    I give that over easily
"What's the nth digit of your four digit personal code?"
"Er - I'm not sure - um - um....." fumbling in the dark, I vaguely remember calling them about five years ago to transfer some money to pay the tax man. So I took a guess at what it would be and passed that test. I also passed the password test. Those hurdles completed, they give me my personal number and I asked for a cheque made out to the third party.

"Oh no, we don't do that - we can transfer it to your own account. But you could register online and do the transaction yourself"

"Ok, I'll register online". I am a software engineer. I specialise in testing computer systems - particularly internet based ones (and in my time banking ones too!) for all manner of industries. I can do this.

    Could I heck!

I tried to log on first just in case it was that simple.
    It wasn't
I then tried to register. I gave all the details correctly, entered my email address and the response was "go away - you need an @ and a . in your email address". My email address has both of those.

    I try again.

    I get the same response

I phone them back and ask if someone could talk me through the online registration process please.

I do the number thing, the personal identifier thing and the letters from the password thing. Twice.

"OK, you're through to the online team. How can we help you"
    "I want to register online"
the number thing, the personal identifier thing and the letters from the password thing are done again.
"OK, what's happens when you try to register"
"It whinges about my email address"
    "What is your email address?"
    I tell them.
"Ok, well I've registered it for you. You will receive a letter from us in the next 4-5 working days and then you'll be able to log on."
"Right so when I get that, I'll be able to access my account online"
"Once you've signed the form and sent it back to us..."

    Aaaargh!!!!!!!!

Just as well I didn't need the money tomorrow...

Oh Soappy! I have had the same 'banging head against wall' feeling 4 or 5 times today with phone calls. I gave up eventually. :rotfl:

It must be a bad day for common sence.

I've put one of the arm covers in the wash on delicates:eek: . Thing is, i'll never get them dry cleaned as there's 8 big cushions, and four arm covers so it's either do it myself or they stay dirty. I'm wondering what colour they'll come up. If it shrinks i'll just tell the cat to lie on that arm of the sofa when we have guests :rotfl: xx

    Mudbath,

My cushion covers quite clearly say "dry clean".
They have never seen the inside of the local "Widow Twankeys" but have seen the inside of my washing machine several times on a short, cool blast.

They are quite happy and still fit...

    Have faith!

Right i've been brave and put in a cushion cover. The arm cover doesn't look any worse for a quick wash but it's a lot lighter in colour.....frighteningly so. It was very, very hard to get the cushion cover off with one hand and probably a stupid thing to do so i'll get DH to take the rest off tomorrow and wash them then. Thanks for encouragement Soappie....I wonder what i've saved not being daft enough to take them to the dreaded dry cleaners. I don't think i've ever used a dry cleaners... mind you, I don't really buy clothes
