Baby sleeping bags

Hi, I'm semi-new here and my first child is due end September.

I've been looking at baby sleeping bags recently (sometimes known as Grobags, but they are actually the brand name) as they seem like an easier way to regulate a baby's temperature while asleep, and also you can feed them in it without them getting cold.

Actual Grobags seem to be about £25-£30, but I bought three at IKEA a couple of weeks ago when they had their 21% day at £9 each (before discount). I've also seen some in Matalan today at £8. I think Mothercare's version is about £15.

I did expect the Grobags to be pricier but three times as much? Is there really that much of a difference? Normally I'd be delighted at such a bargain but this almost seems too good to be true!
Self employed and loving it :D

I think it is just like everything else , you are paying for the brand name . I had one for my DD2 , came from Next and was just as good as any others on the market .
Baby Thomas born 3 months early by emergency section on 21/1/09 weighing 1lb 15ozs .
Thomas came home after 3 months and 2 days in hospital weighing 5lb 15ozs
    Thomas weighed 21lb 4ozs on his 1st birthday , a total weight gain of 18lbs 5ozs !

    I've been Money Tipped!
I used them a long time before Grobag became fashionable... they are all much of muchness. (they existed in France for about 20 years and I had hands me down from my sisters).

Absolutely brilliant to make sure baby stays covered and no risk of being smothered...

I completely agree. The cheaper ones do the job. (I got my daughter's first one from Tesco's and the now bigger one from the reduced section in Boots :D)

    Hi
Grobag really is just a brand name. I have used branded and own-brand sleeping bags, no difference whatsoever. And yes, they are very good and stop baby kicking the covers off and getting cold during the night.
Only thing to bear in mind (which im sure you already know anyway) is to use a sleeping bag appropriate to the room temperature to make sure that baby does not overheat. Many of the bags come with a tog rating and as a rough guide a 0.5tog or 1.0tog is best for the summer and 2.0, 2.5 or 3.0 tog for the winter (depending on you room temp).
Hope this helps, and good luck with the baby when he/she arrives.

Good advice from Lauren. Advised temp for a bedroom (adult and babies) is just 18 degrees C - Grobag provide a thermometer with every bag. When you go in the room it should feel cool to you.

We had about 8 bags of various sizes, never paid £25 for one. Even Grobags can be picked up cheap - Matalan, e-bay and Makro in our case.

i found the grobag design to be the best. For instance, ds had a grobag which was aged 6-12months. There was a zip on the back so that you could put him in the car seat in it, it worked out great. I was also impressed with the quality, he is three years old (in 3-4year old clothes) and the 18-24 month old grobag i bought him almost 2 years ago still is plenty big enough. It's withstood numerous washes and looks almost as good as new. The first bag i bought him was an obscure brand from TK Maxx and after a few washes it was knackered. x

I bought some cheap baby sleeping bags in Lidl last year. My baby is 1 year old tomorrow and they're still in excellent condition having been used and washed frequently over the last year.

She's getting a bit big for them now though, but I'm thinking about just going back to blankets for summer as our house holds the heat very well and stays quite warm at night.
Here I go again on my own....

    Hi
I have a spare one of the grobag thermometers referred to by daveyjp above. I would be happy to give it to you if you want to send me an SAE (PM me if you would like it).

Someone on here advised me to look out for Grobags in TK Maxx.. we got one for £8 on clearance._party_

But in all honesty I doubt there is any difference. Some people think that the 'official' ones are safer, personally I think that's just a myth that the company are happy to perpetuate.

  • Be careful while using baby sleeping bags and check them thoroughly for any loose piece of cotton.
we had an awful experience with one, when my son was about 6 months old we woke up to him screaming and did all the usual checks cuddle food nappy but nothing helped, tried the paracetamol, no go, we then took him completely out of the bag and found to our horror that his little toe had curled around a piece of cotton and had stopped the circulation to his toe and it was almost black. we were terified and took him to the medical centre, by this time the colour had started to come back so they were sure there would be no lasting damage, luckily there hasnt been but that bag went in the bin and we never used one again.
so please check and double check the inside of the bag.
