This happened to my friend's dalmatian, not helped by the fact that something was wrong with her blood which was stopping it from clotting & healing properly. The vet patched her up a number of times, but she kept bouncing her tail off table legs, chair legs doors etc. Eventually the vet recommended she had her tail docked :(. Sad, but a much happier dog now. All you can do is bandage it up until it heals. Depending on the severity of her injuries, the vet might be able to suggest if anything else needs to be done.

Put a bandage on it and plenty of tape/sticking plaster going right up the tail otherwise she will just wag it off. As long as she doesn't chew at the wound I'd take the bandage off at night so that the area can dry out. I had a dog that used to regularly cut open the end of his tail (very whip like and extremely waggy so always hitting it on things) but as long as I kept it clean and covered until healing started it always healed up fine.

It's probably happy tail. I haven't come across it in springers, but then I haven't had much to do with Springers in general... :)
Here is an explanation on how to bandage her tail.
I would take her to the vets if you feel any hint of heat in the tail that might indicate an infection and I would be tempted to bathe the tip of the tail in a saline solution if you are brave enough... It WILL sting her tho so you won't be very popular! However it will help prevent any infections.
The bandage will help protect the tail whilst it heals but if in future this happens a lot then you might want to think about docking the tail. Some dogs suffer from what is known as happy tail, basically the skin on their tails is very thin and because they are happy campers they wag their tails lots and can bang them easily... and then you have a "happy tail" incident :)
Just keep a close eye in case it's getting warm (and therefor infected) and try to protect it till it's healed for now.

I spoke to a springer owner while out walking my dog with the same problem....she had a hair curler taped onto the end of her dogs tail with surgical tape to give it a chance to heal. It looked very strange but she swore it was working!

Our dog (springer) gets this but the !!!!! doesnt...

Our vet said it was split tail and is very common in springers, also one of the reasons why they somtimes get docked.

But she told us not to worry and help it heal with usual human type things. If it continues though and you think its bothering him go back and they may look at docking :)

    Hope this helps

This is soooooo wierd. One of my labs has had this problem this past 5 weeks.
    What a headache..
What I did, I wrapped a Always pad... yes, exactly, around her tail, not totally covering the cut, but when she did wag her tail the pad would get the impact rather than the cut. I used to tape the pad with brown parcel tape... it worked.
I put loads of germoline on it aswell.
The scab eventually came off and left a little crack, so I left the pad off and put vaseline on it 4-5 times a day. Hay presto...... its worked. I must say its been 5 weeks from beginning to end, but its has now totally healed, just waiting for the hair to grow back now.

    Good luck.
