As the title says I need to cook 300 scones very very cheaply for next weeks school fundraiser. The local bakery quoted £100 which is just outrageous so I stupidly said I'd make 'em but......
(1) if I make them using stork will they taste really greasy? is there a supermarket own brand marg that will taste better or work out cheaper.
(2) are there any variations on plain scones which won't cost an arm and a leg to do (eg. cherry scones but cherries are v. expensive)
(3) does anyone have any quick and easy muffin / bun recipes they can recommend which rise everytime into big fluffy muffins ?

Hi
You could try using value currants which are cheaper. I always soak mine for Half an hour before I rinse them and add them, as it stops them sucking all the moisture out. Also cheese scones (my fav), yoghurt scones, herb scones, potatoe scones with leftover mash, apple scones. Should be able to google recipies for most of these.
Hope this helps

Stork won't make them greasy. Butter generally gives the best flavour, but if that's not important (vs price) then go for a cheaper fat. Anywhere you can buy in bulk or get a catering size pack? Don't use anything "low fat" or labelled as "spread" - you really want good old fashioned margarine.(2) are there any variations on plain scones which won't cost an arm and a leg to do (eg. cherry scones but cherries are v. expensive)
Just use raisins, sultanas or currents. Again - a bulk buy/catering pack might be best value.
What about some cheese scones?(3) does anyone have any quick and easy muffin / bun recipes they can recommend which rise everytime into big fluffy muffins ?
Delia's never fail me.
Have you thought about the scale of baking you have to do here? Let's assume that you can get 24 scones in the oven at one time (2 trays of 12). They take approx 15 minutes to bake, say 30 minutes to prepare. In 6 hours, you'd bake 192 ..... assuming you don't do anything else that day. So you've pretty much got 2 solid days baking, just for the scones
It might be better to bake 60 a day for the next five days and freeze them .... they freeze well, but tend to be more crumbly when defrosted.
Could you find four [STRIKE]mugs [/STRIKE]friends to help - then you could all do 60 each. But even making 60 is quite a daunting task .....Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
If you do a proper costing you will probably find that you cant make them for .33p each.
Time / electric/ ingredients etc etc.
Try another bakery or ask them for a discount on that quantity.0 -
Tesco Value or Sainsbury's Basics mixed dried fruit is very nice and its only something like 49p for 500g0

Hi,
Don't know where you are located, but Costco do big trays of lovely scones which should work out quite cheap. I can't remember the price, but I found another post on here which said 24 for £2.89 which works out around 12p each. They are fruit scones. I can't guarantee the price, but they are excellent value for money. Home made might be nicer, but I would weigh up the cost v effort/time.

How about ready-made from a supermarket? or a supemarket with a bakery, maybe Asda or Morrisons?A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.

Tesco do value scones for 34p for a pack of 10.
Cut them and add some jam/cream and sell them with a cup of tea for £1?Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

ps, try them first to make sure they taste OK, and dispose of the wrappers before the commitee see them, they can be left to think you made them yourself, if needs be!Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19
