Teenagers

Options
Post edit- I`m not putting all teenagers into this catogory by the way!! I know there are decent kids out there too !!

I left for work at 3pm (yes I`m using the internet at work - shhh!) and my partner took our daughter to the local park.

He arrived and found a family leaving looking rather disgruntled and then on looking further saw why - 5 teenage boys (aged about 11 - 15) swearing, throwing things and generaly being silly in the childrens play area.

My partner (who is quite a burly bloke) isn`t intimidated by this sort of thing so entered the play area and took our daughter on all the equipment. The boys continued swearing and it became louder and louder. My partner asked them to have some respect, as our daughter is only 5. They continued to do it, paying no attention to wind my partner up. He tried to reason with them and then it became heated.

They started insulting my partner and daughter, being chopsy and trying to start a fight.

At this stage my partner began to leave the park. It was at this point that the `ring leader` shouted
"... and your daughters dead"

My partner calmly put my daughter down from his arms and menacingly walked towards the boy that said it. At this point they all ran off.

My boyfriend phoned me and I got very distraught by it. He phoned the non-emergency police when he got home and they went to check on the park, but they had gone, however they did say that they had an idea of who it was.

Our daughter is fine, but she did ask alot of questions, so my partner has tried to explain that they are just ` naughty boys`.

Honestly nothing surprises me anymore. This Yob culture is getting worse.

The easiest thing to do is reproduce. The hardest thing to do is raise a decent family.

If I were world president I would punish the parents. If the children persisted then I would take the children off them and place them straight into a correction facility.

A bit orwellian and fascist leanings but at least it would work.

Overall the parents ARE the problem. They abdicate too much responsibility to social services, police, court, schools, playstations and television.

I can just hear the parents whinging reply...."but but I have to work to pay the bills, I cant be in two places at the......"

    As for the absent fathers.....

agree as well, how about getting the kids to do community jobs eg picking litter up, while wearing bright coloured overalls while theyre chained by the ankle to the ankle of the person next to them

The problem is that we have so little discipline in this country, and even those that get caught get let off. There's no incentive to behave, and even prison seems to be a walk in the park these days!

If only they would re-vamp the prisons, take away all luxuries, and make prisoners exercise, study and do chores for 16 hours a day. We need a system where people actually think twice before committing a crime, as the thread of prison means very little to some! And they know they'll probably only serve half a sentence...

Some kids smashed my car windscreen a year or so ago, and I could identify the group who did it, but because I couldn't point out exactly which one of them did it, then the police couldn't/wouldn't do anything.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

The question I would be interested in asking,is,if you could identify them, would the Police take action.
You can be fairly certain that they hang around this same area quite frequently, teenagers are creatures of habit.

The parents of bad teenagers fall into two groups:

A] gobby loud, just as bad, parents who would give you the same treatment if you brought it to their attention
B] people who don't outwardly appear to be like Type A, but once you suggest their little precious is a menace they turn into Type A.

It is the parents' acceptance of their kids' bad behaviour which makes the kids grow up being as bad as they like. Then, out in the streets, they will be trying to "out-bad" each other.

We should be able to rush up to them and spray paint them. That way parents will know their kids have been a nuisance and even if they condone it they'll have the hassle of cleaning their kid/clothes of the paint :) Which might mean they start to teach them about manners and behaviour.

I agree that this is a problem, but I've not seen one decent solution to this from any politician. I cannot and do not condone any of the ideas from the 'lock em up' brigade. If you look at sentencing in the US, where they have the death penalty and REALLY long sentences for crimes. Why is their crime rate so high? Surely if the 'deterrent' option worked, this wouldn't be the case? The US has more gun related homicides each year than basically every other country in the world added together. The residents there know that the penalties they face are a whole life in prison, or the death penalty, but it doesn't seem to deter or reduce the crime rate. This tells me that locking them up does not work.

When I was a teenager (more than a few years ago), I was a bit of a git (massive understatement). I was as bad (or actually worse) than these teenagers that we complain about now. However, we had places to go then (youth clubs etc). It was the Tories that started a campaign in the eighties of limiting funds to local councils (so taxes could be cut), and led to a MASSIVE closing down of these facilities for young people. Nowadays, these kids do not have anywhere else to go, and end up gathering in public places. This is why I believe this seems to be such an issue now.

This is only part of the problem. Respect is also part of it.

I used to do voluntary youth work about 12 years ago (I always felt I wanted to help kids out, the same as people tried to help me out when I was young). Part of our training taught us that we were not allowed to handle (even grab their arm to throw them out) a child unless it was an extreme circumstance (imminent violence). The kids knew this all too well, and sometimes used to push us because they knew we couldn't do a thing except to ask them to leave.

One time in the club, an 18/19 year old boy was absolutely in my face when he was high on drink and/or drugs. He knew I could not touch him (even to push him out of the club). I could not do a thing (legally) to stop him acting up. A few weeks later, I was down my local, and saw him with his friends. I went up to him and told him that if he ever did that again to me, I would deal with him outside of the club. By law, I was VERY wrong, but after this chat, he was one of the most polite members we had. He had learnt that he needed to respect me. Laws protecting children are needed, but over the years, I do feel that some of these laws lead problem kids to act up because they know they will not/cannot have any comeback from the people that are there to supervise them.

I could go on a bit more, but I feel I'm writing a novel here. I'll stop now.
