We pay £1500 for a family house in central Cambridge, that seems to be fairly normal for a family house in the city centre, within the catchments for the central schools. Cambridge is a ridiculously overpriced area anyway and we have had to accept that. We've been here for 4 years so have paid a hell of a lot of money in rental but as I have said before, our landlord subsidises the mortgage by £500+ and the house has actually not risen in price in those 4 years, based on current asking prices. When we do buy in 2 years time (I guess), we will be paying more in interest (i.e mortgage rent) to the bank, based on the mortgage we intend or hope on getting. I am quite happy with our house and have no regrets in living here, or what we pay.

    I don't get the clue either :D

you say you earn £37k and only pay £340 per month for rent (inc bills) - what do you do with the other circa £1900pcm you earn? are you saving for a deposit? or just enjoying yourself?

He spends some of it on fast cars, strong wine, and loose women.

    The rest he just wastes.

That's right. :) Except I'm a geek and don't know any loose women.

I'm saving a good chunk of it every month, but I'm not counting pennies and still going out for meals and holidays.

Yes, there are downsides to sharing, but I just can't bring myself to pay any more. I've tried looking for a place of my own, but doing the sums (£650 x 12) + council tax + bills just puts me right off.

Unfortunately, the property ladder rung has always been just that little bit beyond my reach, plus the lifestyle sacrifice I have to make if I overstretched myself to get a shoe box didn't appeal to me.
