Do you know anyone (outside London) who is paying £1000 per month in rent???

    These figures are tosh.

In Jan 2007 I upped the rent for my 4 bed terraced house from £900 to £1100 per month. Even then I am still renting out below the market average.
I feel its more important to ensure that I have next to 0 void periods (still 0 for this property) and leave the rent the same as long are tenants are in the property.

    I only increase between tenants.

So no, these figures are not tosh for my area

We keep on hearing about rents going up, but I never see any evidence of it.

    I rent out two properties.
One I increased from 900 to 1100 per month in Jan 2007 and the other from 700 to 850 per month just two months ago.
I also market below the average rent to reduce the risk of voids.

It's probably depends on the area you live in but my experience, property has increased in rent in the last 18 months

Just did a quick search for Aberdeen.
I'm not going to work out an average, but there are : -
9 properties less than 500 pounds
    53 properties between 500 and 700 pounds
    9 properties between 700 and 800 pounds
    37 properties between 800 and 1000 pounds
61 properties above 1000 pounds of which 24 are greater than 1500

I'm living in Cambridge too. I'm earning £37k and I can't bring myself to pay that much in rent (for a 1 or 2 bed place). Currently £340 per month all in for a huge room. :) No council tax, no bills, no repair hassles, someone even cleans the house!

I don't know how people can spend £1000+ on rent. Yes, I'm just tight. :D

You may be tight but I bet you're rolling in it (the money I mean!). :D

People in London must be making so much more money than I am. :)

you say you earn £37k and only pay £340 per month for rent (inc bills) - what do you do with the other circa £1900pcm you earn? are you saving for a deposit? or just enjoying yourself?

He might only pay £340, but that's a shared place.

You can't sit round in your grundies day in day out if you're sharing.

People need their own space. So they can have their stuff around them and not have to get dressed just because they want to pick up the post from the mat and make a coffee.

Crash pads in Citispace in Leeds are still tumbling in price, just as I predicted a few months ago. Back in January they were wanting £550-575 pcm for them. A few weeks ago they were down to £395 pcm. Saw ads outside the place today for £375 pcm.

And I bet that still nobody is interested.

    And reduced a further £25 ! -

That's over £200 pcm they've dropped in less than 5 months.
