gizmoleeds wrote:You ever get people ask you about Windows 3.1 these days? I was so used to that thing I delayed switching for years but eventually changed in '99/2000 (as new programs wouldn't run on it) - and even after that I had Program Manager set up in Win98!!
Sometimes, as someone asked me about program manager on 95 the
other day and said, it didnt exist, until i said try a new shortcut
and give it a name of progman.exe, and voila the same as 3.1
that left em a bit stumped
I really liked program manager, Ive found no way of
getting it in XP, maybe they changed the path name.0 -
After 4/5 years I've adjusted now, but the start menu can still be fiddly when it gets clogged up with a huge list of programs you have to scroll down.Mr_Skint wrote:I really liked program manager, Ive found no way of

All the keyboard shortcuts still work, which I still find really useful - I can manipulate windows and stuff so much quicker than other people I work with. No-one bothers to learn them these days though as they're not essential.0 -

Or you could go to START then RUN type in MSCONFIG then click SERVICES and then Disable the one you want or disable all. Thats if your running windows xp. Forgive me if I'm wrong but its worth a try.0

Perhaps you mean the Startup tag.. thats less dangerous.
I'd strongly recommend against using MSCONFIG for disabling services as you could do some serious damage in there!!Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication - Leonardo Da Vinci0 -
I don't think there is a way to hide these icons in win 98 as download.com has little programs which can do it for you (and no-one would make these if there was just a setting to do it for you) - unfortuntely none of these are free. I suggest if there are two many then check what programs they are for and see if those programs have an option in their settings window (usually Tools->Settings or similar) for the icon. Also, some of them might be "background utilities" which you don't necessarily need running anyway.
If you have trouble with this list the porgrams whose icons you want rid of for us as I'm sure some of us will have the same ones and we can tell you if there is an option or not.0 -

thanks, I would like to keep the programs on the desk top but want to hide them on the systems tray, such as the printer icon, kodak easyshare, quick time pro,
and 3D-mouse. I have windows 98 and outlook express. thanks for any help.0 -
I dont know why the print icon is showing - mine only show you are printing - what printer do you have? Does the icon look like a company logo or anything or does it look like a normal windows one?adeliene wrote:thanks, I would like to keep the programs on the desk top but want to hide them on the systems tray, such as the printer icon, kodak easyshare, quick time pro,

I don't have kodak or quick time, but if you right click these icons there *should* be a "Properties" option - if there is search all the different tabs and any sub-windows (buttons with "advanced settings" for example) and look for something along the lines of "show taskbar icon". Or look for "load automatically on startup" - because you don't really need these programs open all the time. Same applies to 3D mouse.
Hope this helps you.0
