I heard an article on the radio about this, I think it was Clive Andersons slot on bbcr2.
The lawyer guy said you can call yourself anything you want, you don't need the to go the deed poll route, you just decide what you are going to be called, I can't remember how he explained things like getting ID and bank accounts into your new name, but he did also mention deed poll as a simple "more official" (but uneccessary) route.0 -

Positive affirmation. I no longer look at myself as round :rotfl: Ok that's a load of ****. I changed my avatar and signature in support of a banned member for 24 hours (I know I'm loyal) and had trouble getting my old ones back so I came up with a new version.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

Yes, I knew that was the case. Unfortunately no-one seems to have told the banks etc who are very keen on detecting 'fraud terrorist money laundering activities'. I also find it strange that some utilities will just change your name on a phone call but others need proof ie a copy of your passport etc. Also, to change your passport you have to provide an official document you can't just write and say 'I want to change my name' unless its back to your maiden name when they want a copy of your birth cert and a signed statement. Sometimes I think they all make it up as they go along!!~A mind is a terrible thing to waste on housework~0 -
When I reverted to my maiden name Coventry Building Society refused to change my name on the account without either a marriage licence or a deed poll. I even had my birth certificate and passport in my maiden name. The bit that really annoyed me was that I could close my account and had sufficient id to reopen one in my maiden name.
I closed my account and went eleewhere after comprehensively answering the 'Can you tell me why you're closing your account' question.0 -
Ha ha, complete trauma, always!
I changed my entire name by legal deed after my divorce as I never liked my maiden name (or first name) anyway. I sent off all my name-change papers to my insurance company after discovering an old policy hadn't been changed - I'd been living with my new name for about 3 years by then.
Anyway, they sent the papers back but addressed it to me in my old name - needless to say I had fun at the post office trying to get them to accept that the proof of ID they wanted to see was in the envelope I was trying to collect! In the end the PO guy held on to the bottom of the envelope, while I opened it and tugged the paper out a bit to show him the proof! We found it quite funny but I doubt the people in the queue felt the same...
More recently, I tried to amend an error on my TV licence - from Miss to Ms (their error) and got a very snotty letter from them telling me it was illegal to attempt to transfer a TV licence to someone else as it was a legal contract! I wrote back saying they could call me whatever they liked in future so long as my TV licence was valid! (Resisted the urge to just write a letter saying "Duuuu-uuuhhh!!!" to them instead)
