Credit check for replacement card from MBNA?

My husband rang to get a replacement card from MBNA, they said one would be sent out in 7 - 10 days. All good you'd think, until today he got a call from them saying that they need to perform a credit check in order to send out the replacement card. He asked them why, and they just said, standard procedure, because we do.... He said no, and told them to.... Can anyone shed light on this, and whether this is normal as this is the first time we have come across this.

That's certainly not normal at all. Credit check should only be done when opening a new account or reviewing credit limit. Tell your hubby to log-on to MBNA.co.uk and request a replacement card there.

Condition 13C (1st bullet) says they can carry out a credit search at any time for the ongoing management of your account.

Making a request online will not necessarily avoid a search being made, since you agreed they could when you signed the credit agreement.

MBNA do make 'ad-hoc' searches of your credit file throughout your relationship with them...I've had several (for no 'apparent' reason).

It's probably these 'ad-hoc' searches that have resulted in many cardholders seeing their APR's climb above 30%.

Impromptu, unprovoked, random, for no apparent reason. ie, you expect a search for an application or a credit limit increase request...but not one for a new card or some other event. For example, MBNA searched me 'mid-term' on a 6 month 0% follow on offer...and I've no idea why, other than to satisfy themselves "he's only paying a fiver a month; is he over-committed elsewhere?"

'Ad hoc' might not be the best choice of Latin, but I knew what I meant. ;)
