Can you create any scheduled tasks at all?

No. The reason it seems is that I was using an Admin account which had no password set. Setting one fixed it and my laptop has just obediently shut itself down.

However, that's probably a bit academic - Davetrousers is probably home by now and eating his dinner...

Ooh, this would be useful to me too. Does it start the count down to auto shut down after xxxx seconds of no keyboard/mouse action?

Would it work if I'd fallen asleep watching a DVD, or would Windows Media Player prevent it from working?

    "shutdown -t xxxx -f -s"

should force any running programs to close.

    For example

    "shutdown -t 7200 -f -s"

will pop up a window counting down the seconds and will power off after 2 hours.

There is a rundll parameter that will put machine into shutdown state and will probably be a bit cleaner than a forced shutdown where data may be lost.
I shall try and find the command which u can use in a short cut and schedule it with any scheduling application

Another user here, makes life easier having a GUI based app rather than going to command prompt.

    Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt!

For the OP, the timed shutdown command would probably be adequate, but if you wanted to watch a DVD while it was waiting to shutdown it would be a pain, as the pop-up window counting down the seconds is forced into the foreground and you can't close it...

In which case either the Task Scheduler or the suggested Winoff app both look to be a better bet.

Damn I just gave this a try, my computer is now going to shutdown in 2 hours and theres no way I can stop it without manually shutting down or restarting!

But thanks anyway it's pretty cool to know and can be useful!

Edit: Managed to stop the shutdown by using the abort argument:
    shutdown -a
