Is there such a thing as a timer that will automatically shut down my computer (XP) in a few hours?
I go home at 5pm but need to leave my comp. on for a few more hours so it can finish what it's doing then shut down.
Any help?
Thanks

Go to control panel> power options> then you can sort it out from there. I thing the best thing you can do is the hibernates thing unless anyone else can suggest better0

Yes there is, it's power save mode (really sorry I can't remember how to find it though) and you can set it up to turn off the monitor after a certain time then switch off too after a certain time. Have a quick ganders in help & support for power save mode (I'm sure it's called that).0

Another way to do this would be to open a command prompt and type
"shutdown -t xxxx -f -s"
where xxxx is the number of seconds that you want to elapse until shutdown occurs. The -f will force any running program to close before shutting down.0 -
create a batch file in c:\windows\system32
e.g. shutme.bat with the single command.
shutdown -f -s
Then start a command promt: (start, run, "cmd" enter).
Type : "AT" enter
it will tell you you have no entries in list.
Say you want to shutdown at 00:45
Type "AT 00:45 c:\windows\system32\shutme.bat".
Look at what it says now when you type "AT" enter.
Type "AT /H" for help on other commands and deleting jobs you have set up.0 -
Or you can use task scheduler and schedule c:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe to shut down everyday at a time of your choosing.
Goto control panel, administrative tools to find the task scheduler.0 -

Are you the administrator?0

Where do you get the access denied error and what OS are you running? AT is the same thing really just not very user friendly.0
-
Can you create any scheduled tasks at all?0
