Camping with 6m baby

When DS1 was 8m old we went camping. I swore I would never do it again, as he woke up cold in the middle of the night and it was so cold and difficult to get him warm again (wouldn't snuggle into me). His little hands were like ice ... I met up with some friends and slept the next night in their house.

I swore I would never do it again, but I am, and DD is only 6m  .

I have just tried her in a snow suit, and it fits her nicely, and I reckon she will be warm in that but it doesn't have gloves (although I do have some woolen mitten that I can put on her overnight. I also have a fleece snow suit, which has gloves on, so that should keep warm, if I tuck them in. (The reason I am on about the gloves is because it will interfer with her comfort thumb sucking ...:o )

Anyhow she'll be in either of those, but do you reckon I put her a sheet (and / or blanket as well) over her. She is more than 6m so I am not overly concerned about SIDS, but the risk is still there ...

She sleeps very well at night, only occassionally waking so hopefully ....

Am I completely mad  ?

BTW we are planning on sleeping in a tracksuit, in our summer sleeping bags inside the tent ... and the min forecast is 10 and 8 (for the two nights we are out)

It sounds as if she's bundled up for sleeping on Mount Everest, but I admit that I don't know much about babies.

I'd recommend layers of clothing and covers for camping. It's much easier to remove a blanket if the baby is too warm than disturb them removing a snowsuit. Last year baby wore vest, babygro, cardigan, socks under babygro, grobag and I had several blankets which I added if the temp dropped. If your baby would wear a little hat just to stop the body temp dropping you can slip it on before you go to sleep if you think it's cold in the tent. I love camping!! Have fun.

She sounds like she'll be quite snug. The only other optionis if you are sleeping on an air bed how do you feel about having her sleeping with you? We ended up doing this last year but our son was 18 months old then.

Have fun going - hope the weather is good for you.

I think you are worrying too much. We went camping in Scotland with DD2 when she was 3 months old. She wore her usual babygro and fleecy sleepsuit. Usual blankets in a travel cot. She slept through the night for the first time - the fresh air obviously suited her!

sounds like she'll be snug - I've always found the ground is the coldest thing so as long as she's away from that she should be fine - enjoy!

Ok so have you thought about layers for the baby as mentioned above but also a baby sleeping bag, that way they can't kick the coveres off and I would say safer than sleeping in a snow suit, incase of a heat of the moment and she overheats in the snow suit?

Just a thought, can be picked up cheaply from asda, we had to do this as my daughter wouldn't keep her covers on at all she is now 11 months old and we gave up with the sleeping bags as she could escape from them aswell so now if she wants to sleep upside down and back to front in the cot we just let her :)

How big is your tent / sleeping compartment in tent? Will baby be in the same "room" as you? Remember how hot it gets in a tent with lots of bodies zipped inside...
I'd go with the "layers" suggestion.
  • We took our twins camping when they were small and gave them lots of layers - under them as well as over them. We also made sure that we had a flask of warm drink to hand so that if any of the kids did wake up they could have something to keep them cosy while they fell asleep again. They didn't wake up until after everyone else though - i think all the fresh air and playing all day had worn them out!! Have fun!
