elektra was given this info eighteen months ago. see this thread here.

Some people give up far too easily, even when they know that it can be done and others have it working!

Actually I'm someone who never gives up easily.

It used to work for me with AOL dialup and port 25 and tesco smtp.
I think it stopped working when I swapped to broadband, although occasionally a small email would get through. I did try port 587 and aol smtp but could never get it to work and still can't.
As I had alternative way (webmail) to send mail form original address and AOL stated they did not support smtp in this way I decided to stick with webmail. Hence left settings as tesco. So in a way you could say I gave up ( but not easily).

OP should be able to get incoming working and I'll watch thread with interest to see if they get outgoing working.

Well you can't use Tesco's smtp from another ISP. I used to be with Tesco.

    Hi,
Upto about 4 years ago I did internet support for about 5 years and I can tell you AOL was a major problem for people switching to other internet providers. It takes over the system! Maybe it's different now but if it's the same then it'll be hard to use any 'outside' mail software as you'll get conflicts.
Maybe you can get round it by removing the AOL panel and manually setting it up but as I've not used AOL for over 10 years I can't help on that score.

People used to pay you for advice like that and you did it for five years? It really frustrates me when people make pointless inaccurate posts and claim to be an expert/support etc.

ahh but he had access to one hell of a database then, and to be fair he never claimed to be an expert.
its far too easy to get flamed in here as to be fair it doesn't take an expert to solve a problem, only a guy who remembers going thru the same thing before
As i said only one place this info is coming from
