AOL customer wanting to use non AOL email

My mate is trying to set up Outlook to send/receive emails using his newly registered domain, (using POP3) but he was not able to do this and was told that AOL blocks some of the standard email ports.

I'm not sure what that means, but is there a way to help my mate?

Cheers

    Hi,
Upto about 4 years ago I did internet support for about 5 years and I can tell you AOL was a major problem for people switching to other internet providers. It takes over the system! Maybe it's different now but if it's the same then it'll be hard to use any 'outside' mail software as you'll get conflicts.
Maybe you can get round it by removing the AOL panel and manually setting it up but as I've not used AOL for over 10 years I can't help on that score.

As bad as AOL's software is, this has got nothing to do with it. Even if you never installed any AOL software you'd run into the same problem if your ISP was AOL.

To the OP, tell your friend to change the email port settings in Outlook from 25 to 587 for outgoing, 110 for incoming should still work.

Full set-up information given here from the horses mouth, rather than irrelevant and misleading info from an ex IT support monkey!

    Strong words... (unnecessarily?)

Thanks for that but the page explains the set up for AOL emails i.e. xxxx@aol.com using aol mailservers, whereas my question was about using a different domain and external mail servers i.e. xxx@mydomain.co.uk

    Thanks in any event.

In terms of port settings it's the same answer (well should be but you never know with AOL).

I disagree, there are far too many irrelevant posts on here, posted by so called IT experts with nothing useful to say. Why post if no useful information is given. The page confirms the necessary ports to use and you should know about using your own domain etc.

my example using AOL as ISP and looking at my tesco email

    settings are:

my incoming server is a POP3 server
    incoming mail (pop3) mail.tesco.net

account name my tesco email address

    incoming mail server 110

AOL don't support outgoing mail in this way

have never had much success with outgoing mail - a few small ones got through. Tried port 587 but no joy there either. Now just use tesco webmail version rather than outlook express.

That'll be because you've got the wrong smtp settings. As far as I know tesco don't allow remote access to their smtp server. You have to use (your ISP's) AOL's smtp settings as is the case with most ISPs. I.e. your smtp should be smtp.aol.com.

elektra was given this info eighteen months ago. see this thread here.

Some people give up far too easily, even when they know that it can be done and others have it working!

I think first we have to ask what email server is he requesting the mail off?, this is fairly crucial as if its not a standard isp setup only there (the mail server) will he find the info he requires..
Aol didn't use to support pop3/ smtp so i would check to see if they have started to or not.
i had to set my aolmail account up using either direct connection to aols network or via IMAP for my system
