Again I'd say look in the articles in the 'banking/saving' section of this site. Also look at the associated discussion threads on this forum for each of those articles, they usually contain a lot of good info and links to sites for researching funds (try searching for 'finding funds' for example).

You could invest in funds and then switch to shares, you just want to know how much you'll be incrring in charges - both initial and withdrawal charges. If you go with a broker like hargreaves lansdown the initial charges on most funds are usually around 0-0.25% anyway so you don't have to worry too much about 'losing' your initial charge (or rather 'worry about having paid an initial charge and having to wait until the fund's performance has improved enough to cover the initial charge you paid). Withdrawal charges are fairly rare but it's important to check nonetheless (I recently found a few of my funds have withdrawal charges I wasn't aware of ).

So, if you don't pay too much in ICs, you can sell your holding in the fund and then just move into shares... though having said that of course it's never a good idea to sell on a whim, at least unless you've made a decent profit first
