...it says the codec name is DivX MPEG-4 version 5. Have put this in google, but again not sure where I should download from, also not sure if it is the same as the codec you suggested I download earlier or not?

Yep, that was the one I advised to download before.

In regards to finding a 'safe' site, well, the Internet always carries risks so you need to weigh up whether it's worth 'the risk' to you. I haven't been able to find the codec from sites that I have heard of before, but I've had a look around and came across this:

    http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Multimedia_and_Graphics/Video_and_Animation_Tools/DivX_Player__with_DivX_Codec__for_2K_XP.html

Just make sure you have a good anti-virus to scan the contents before executing.

Having said that, since you've updated to a newer codec version already (6.2 something?), it may not allow you to execute it 'cos it's an older version, so you may need to uninstall the previous version first, restart, etc...

Maybe I'm a bit too lax when it comes to this sort of thing when I download...I think my luck is gonna run out soon lol

Waaaay Heyyyy, I've sorted it:j Still messing about with Prism and stumbling around somewhat blindly, I happened to notice that in the drop down list for video compressor in the encoder options was MPEG4(Native). So I thought I may as well give that a try as MPEG4 was the codec name given for converted .avi file that wouldn't play. So I stuck the mpg file into Prism again using that setting and it worked!! Now imports perfectly into Windows Moviemaker.

So, thank so much for your help Darkfibre for putting me on the right track and Thomas01155 for your suggestion even though I didn't need it in the end.
