Sorry, haven't had another chance to spend enough time on the pc yet. Will try to do it over the weekend and will let you know.

Ok, so I tried to do converting option shown above. However when I googled DivX 5.2.1 Codec I was totally lost as to which of the sites offering the download were safe. So I went to the DivX site where there was a DivX 6.8.2 Codec was available as a free download and I downloaded that instead in the hope that it was an updated version of 5.2.1.

However when I try to convert the MOD file in Prism, firstly when I add it to the video converter screen it says under 'other information' - format may not be supported. Then when I click on convert it comes up 'Encoder error. Please check your encoder options'. If I change the file extension to mpg and then move it into Prism, I do not get the format may not be supported bit, but after clicking convert still get the encoder error message.

Is this just because I downloaded the wrong DivX Codec, or because Prism does not support MOD? If I definitely need 5.2.1 please can you advise of a safe site to download from - on google there was one to download from vunet and I seem to recognise that name, but don't know if for a good or bad reason!! Would this be a safe site do you think?

In regards to the encoder error, please install this codec pack:

    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/k-lite_mega_codec_pack.cfm

    Restart your machine.

Before trying to use Prism again, try opening the newly named .mpg file in Windows Movie Maker. If that doesn't work, open the .mod file with Prism and try the conversion again.

Have now downloaded this file and restarted computer. Renamed a MOD file to mpg and tried to import - same error message as before. Tried to open the mod file with Prism and got the same errors as before. However, I decided to copy another MOD file and try that one in Prism, but accidentally selected the original MOD file I had tried to convert and it said that the avi file already existed and did I want to overwrite it!! Upon checking 'my computer' the avi files were indeed there of 4 different MOD files that I had copied and tried to convert in Prism. However, when importing into moviemaker they are each only 0.17 seconds long - so nothing on them to see! BTW in Prism the encoder option was still set to divx 6.8.2 codec - should I have changed that?

Had a quick listen to the youtube (is that you?), but think I will need to concentrate on that when I have a bit more time as all sounded a bit technical.

Nope, that's not me...just something I found on my travels...

To be honest I'm fast running out of ideas with this one. It seems to me the only real thing left to do is to get the Cyberlink software or Adobe Premiere (if you can) to allow for conversion.

Sorry I couldn't get it entirely resolved for you :(

Thank you for trying anyway. Just one more question if I may - I am following the instructions in the youtube link you said at the moment and downloading the free trial of adobe premiere (taking ages!). Whilst waiting I clicked on another youtube link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HX1lPCZPXyw&NR=1 - which seems to be a free converter for any type of media file. I wondered whether I may have your advice about this one - is it safe do you think? The Adobe Premiere (if it works) only has a 30 day trial and then I will have to pay, but this one appears to be free. Your advice will be much appreciated.

Sorry, whilst waiting for adobe premiere to download (still waiting!), thought I would check out the prism troubleshooting site. Under what to do if your converted file won't play correctly, it suggests that for .avi files you could try to open in Prism and look in the other info field to find the codec name, then to try to download and install that codec and try to convert again. When I put the .avi file in prism, it says the codec name is DivX MPEG-4 version 5. Have put this in google, but again not sure where I should download from, also not sure if it is the same as the codec you suggested I download earlier or not? Please could I trouble you to advise whether you think this might be the answer I am looking for?

That's basically the K-Lite codec pack that I advised the OP to download and install?

OP - give this one a shot if you want, I think at this point you've got to try everything..!
