I got the Hotel to arrange a Taxi - cost 30 Euros 35 with tip.
Via Nazionale (by Republica) is only a few minutes walk from Termini.
Agree with the warnings above - if you are approached by anyone to admire children etc you are being targetted.
Rome is fabulous for adults - but it ain't Disney - suggest you research some activities for kids. If they are like mine were at that age, they will be bored stiff.0 -
Keep your money and credit card pinned to the inside of your waistband or pinned inside a trouser pocket. You can pick up small fabric envelope type purses in shops like Claire's Accessories. I was dragged down a busy road by a pillion scooter rider in Naples. I had my bag strap over my shoulder, he grabbed the bag as they drove past, but instead of the bag being pulled off my shoulder the strap twisted around my wrist and I went along as well. After what seemed like being dragged hundreds of yards, the guy let go or he would have been pulled off the back of the bike. I ended up with badly grazed knees, ripped trousers, scuffed shoes and a very sore elbow but I did not loose my bag that had everything in it.SallyD0

I was also reading somewhere about bus no 64 in Rome,...... There are a number of pickpocketers in operation on it. And you would not suspect them as they are disguised as gentlemen with ties and jackets. Or many of them have a jacket floded on their arms to hide what their hands are doing underneath the jacket.....I wanted to thankyou a million times but its a shame that I can press the button just once :T0

This thread makes Rome sound like the most dangerous place on earth !
When visiting anywhere not familiar common sense applies about hiding valuables, money etc.
And before you ask, I have been to Rome as a tourist !0 -

Depends how you define dangerous – its not like it is Baghdad!
However pickpocketing and bag snatching from tourists is a growth industry in the major cities of Italy.
Common sense suggests you should also hide valuables, money etc even if you are visiting somewhere familiar !0 -
i have been to rome a couple times not the safest place in the world it seems. I myself have not been a target of such crimes. But as you walk around some parts of town you can see and sense that ppl are a bit dodgy and upto no good. Look out for gypsy like women with children around termini, I was bored one day and just sat there ppl watching and saw them in action, they can be very good at what they do!!!!!
use a money belt, money pouch, and keep valuables in the hotel safe!!
Spread your money into loads of different pockets and carry 2 wallets one for cash one for cards and keep them separate. Worst case if someone points a knife at you you jus give them the cash wallet. All basic safety stuff really but stuff alot of ppl neglect and become lazy aboutCharles J0 -
I would like to add that I have been to Rome a few times and use an apartment there. I have never once felt threatened or intimidated, day or night.
Hmmm...maybe they are intimidated by me.
In my eyes there is little to worry about. Just take the usual precautions and enjoy your stay.0
