I'm sorry but I can't see the logic of connecting up a console to a 17" TFT monitor, then paying for converters to connect a freeview box or looking for one that has HDMI output (and have to pay for switch boxes). Try and find a cheap 23" or 26" LCD TV and get freeview built in and you can use that as a 2nd monitor.

DVI doesn't carry audio and as you have now found out TFT monitors have either no speakers or rubbish ones. If they do have an audio input, it will be one slot and you will need to constantly connect and disconnect. Sorry mate but you've been given some bad advice here.....

thanks for that insight. but is there anything I can do about the sound? like perhaps get a cheap speaker system that the white and red leads (L and R I believe) can connect to? there is also an optical-out slot on the cable for audio, where could I connect that to?

    thanks!

Audioengine A2 or Acoustic Energy Aego M's. I suppose it depends on your definition of cheap! You could try a set of pc speakers that have an aux input (usually used for mp3 players) and then get a RCA phono to 3.5mm adaptor for a few quid.

    Or get a 5.1 system!

I actually do own a set of pc speakers that's i'd be happy with, but I fail to visualise how they'd work with the link you posted? the pc speakers i own have the same connection as any headphones, so is there any adaptor that I can I get that would allow the white and red connectors from the VGA cable to connect directly to the pc speakers? sorry if that sounds a bit confusing.

You connect the adaptor to the red/white audio outputs from the Xbox 360 to the 3.5mm input on the speakers. The adaptor takes the 2 RCA connections and converts them to the 3.5mm output. If the speakers have a cable, then simply get a coupler like http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcables/AD010.html?id=BtoiWR7A
