I phoned phoenix to enquire when the bill was due and asked about a key and they sent me one yesterday. I`ve turned the gas way down so it dosn`t come on now. There is no label stating what the meter reading was on installation.

That comment is sandwiched between two meter box comments. How did you "turn the gas way down"?

TBH, before you turned the gas down you would have been better running the heating "normally" for a few days and checking the meter reading every day. Then post the meter readings for further advice.
  • I lowered the temperature on the thermostat device. It was pre set for six times of the day 21 for morning, 20 during the day ( It`s very cold in the north here) and 17 at night so there is no heat at night. The area where I have set the little box with the thermostat occasionally falls a little below 20 so the radiators come on about three times during the day for a little while. I have changed them all to 17 so it won`t come on at all.

There are a couple of stickers in the box, one for installation date--- nothing written there though, and one that looks like it could be for a previous meter reading --- nothing written there either.

There is a we handle in the box , I presume that is to turn off the gas I`ll have to enquire on Monday, Thanks for bringing that to my attention,I actually never thought of an emergency.

I will check with my neighbour who had gas installed a few weeks before me , she has a pay as you go card and only tops up an average of £10 a week.

The meter box can be opened with a pair of long nosed pliers-or the keys are available at any plumber or DIY shed for about a pound.

Take a photograph before someone destroys the evidence by writing on the labels.

That's a good idea thanks jalexa I`ll do that now .
I just happened to meet the local plumber, who installed my boiler , this morning. He says no way I could have used that amount and that sometimes used meters are installed so here`s hoping he`s right. I`ll phone phoenix tomorrow and post the outcome.
  • panic over. someone read the meter yesterday and confirmed that my reading was correct.
Apparently the initial reading is recorded as 804 so someone just added two 00 before it, their fault. They recon the initial reading was 02804 so we have only used £100 of gas over the past six weeks.

Thanks for all your help and advice. i will certainly keep a close eye on the units from now on.
