We have had gas heating installed three weeks ago and I read my meter this morning , it reads 02977 (m3), the rest of the numbers are red. does anyone know how much that actuall will cost to date? i was quite horrified to multiply that by 11 and get over £300 could that possibly be right !

or better still Ihave used 32,747 kwh in three weeks that can`t be right can it !
  • it reads 02977 (m3),

The meter obviously was not at zero when installed.

If you look on the meter it should have a label stating what the meter reading was when installed.

The OP did not say that the meter was installed 3 weeks ago-only that gas CH was. Without knowing the meter reading 3 weeks ago, the calculation is impossible.
OP, if you have a metric meter, your usage is as you say around 33,000 kWh and so the cost would be around £1,250. I don't think so.

It was only installed by phoenix three weeks ago, I presume it was 0 to start with. I had no key to open the box untill yesterday.

Did you not take a opening reading then, if this is a new supply? Call your supplier and see what opening reading they have logged.
If it was reading 0, then the meter is faulty, and dramatically so.
Monitor the daily recorded usage for a couple of days.

  • Thanks , I never thought of it not being at zero to start with . As I said i had no key, I phoned phoenix to enquire when the bill was due and asked about a key and they sent me one yesterday. I`ve turned the gas way down so it dosn`t come on now. There is no label stating what the meter reading was on installation.

You need to confirm what reading your supplier has logged then. You cannot have used 11,000kWh per week!

    Questions:

    1) Is the gas tap, to turn off the gas to the property, in this locked box ?

    2) If yes, I would have serious words with the fitting company, should there have been a gas leak in the property, you wouldn't have had access to shut off the gas.
    3) I'm sure that when meters are changed there should be a label attached to the new meter giving (a) the old meter final reading, (b) the new meter initial reading, (c) the old meter serial number and (d) the date fitted.
