Theft is not limited to tangible items only. You've use a single confined definition of theft and it is not the only one. In legal terms and in the English language, theft can apply equally to intellectual property as well and is merely the act of taking what you do not rightfully own without permission. That does not specify anywhere that the original owner must be deprived of the original or of physical property in some way. If you take a look at any official definition of theft you'll see that.

If it was quite as straight forward as that why don't the police charge illegal downloaders of music and DVD films with theft rather than copyright offences?
An illegal download of a tomtom map equates exactly to an illegal download of an mp3 or a film.

I also wouldn't say the comparison between an illegal downloader and a shoplifter to be all that accurate.

We could argue all night about the precise definition of the word "theft". However, it is somewhat absurd to suggest that making an unauthorized copy of a Tom Tom map is either legally or morally equivalent to shoplifting.

I would argue that the that the "piracy is theft" rhetoric spouted FACT is actually a cynical corruption of language designed to sway public opinion.

Incidentally, a quick search of wikipedia found the following basic definition of theft in the 1968 theft act:
"A person shall be guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it."
Copyright infringement may be illegal, but it not consistent with this definition.
The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.

Regardless of an individual's view on the morality and legality of donwloading a copy the baord rules that everyone agreed to when joining this site state

    "ILLEGAL TOPICS

Please do not discuss illegal issues or those that are grey areas in law on this forum. The Board Guides have been asked to remove any such posts. These include the cross-border sale of tobacco, file-sharing, breaking copy protection, hacks, keygens, trading registration codes, pornography, Russian MP3 download sites or other ways to illegally use software. "
    (My highlighting)

So this thread should be closed unless anyone can actually advise on a cheap way of getting the maps.

I would recommend asking on https://www.pocketgpsworld.com, if you can get it cheaper someone there will knwo where.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

I would disagree with you on that one. Theft is taking something off someone, so you have it and they don't. What we are talking about is copying something, of which there are an unlimited number of copies, so both you and they have it. So although it is still illegal I wouldn't say you are reduced to the level of shoplifter. I'll be the first to admit that probably around 3/4 of my music collection has been downloaded through, erm, shall we say unscrupulous means.

So as a thief, your comments are as worthless as your morals...

Sorry people and especially OP, I wasn't being very helpful by starting this whole thing off, I was just meaning to spark good hearted debate, albeit the wrong place and the wrong time as some seem to think.
Bill - Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that rule means the actual act of telling someone how to copy music etc, not discussing the rights and wrongs of it without actually doing it, so we're ok.

Conor - I'm not saying I'm being morally ok in doing it, I know I'm not, I just don't really care if I deprive some money grabbing record company of a few quid they don't even deserve IMO. And also I think the general consensus is that the comparison between copyright infringement and theft is not really accurate, so I'm not a thief.
