Paypal and paying via credit cards

I have been using paypal to make payments on stuff I've won on ebay for quite a while but I have never actually deposited any money via my credit card. I have done online surveys and recieved payments to my paypal account and this has been enough for me to buy some cheap items won on ebay.
I am now wanting to pay for more expensive items and will need to plump up my paypal balance to do so but do not know how to go about it. I get the impresion that if I paid by paypal but did not have enough funds to cover it then paypal will automatically draw the required sum from my registered credit card. Is this an accurate assumption?

yes,
paypal will deduct any money you have in your paypal account and then draw the rest from your card.smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

I'm a bit confused...I thought that if you specify a debit or credit card to pay with, they will take the whole amount from the card.
I have a few pounds in my Paypal account, and I regularly pay by Switch through Paypal. They've never taken any money from the actual Paypal account, they just charge the whole amount to the card.0 -
Whenever i have used it they have taken all th money from my paypal and then the remainder on my debit/credit card.0

I think this explains it. I've only got about £1.20 in my actual Paypal account, so I think it defaults to my primary card, which is Switch.
Payment Methods
'Balance': When sending money via PayPal, the balance in your PayPal Account is used first
If you have more than one positive currency balance, the entire amount is funded from the selected currency
If balance used to send the payment is insufficient, it may default to another currency balance depending on amount of funds available
If your payment is sent from a currency balance that is not open, the payment will be funded with a registered credit card or bank account. Please review the 'Check Payment Details' page to see the funding source used to fund your payment0 -
to be honest i am a bit peeved with paypal and beginning to think it is a bit of a money making scam.
i have just sold my first few items on ebay. every time i received payment i was told that my account needed to be upgrading - which involved even greater costs.
it was real pain negotiating with the winning to bidder to try and find a way of getting payment. in the end the first one is sending me a cheque, meanwhile i have given up and upgraded very reluctantly.
am i the only one who thinks this and are there any other ways of receiving payment easily on ebay?0 -
See other thread...
Offer a discount for bank transfer ..... I do this online straight into a persons account.
Mind you not many people take you up on this. Esp if for small amounts.0 -
I offer a multitude of payment methods, from bank transfers, nochex, cheque etc and yet 90% of my payments usually come through paypal.
I actually do find it easier to use paypal as it is much quicker and the stuff doesn't lie around my house for ages. I sold about 10 things last Sunday, 8 were paid immediately by paypal and were all sent out on Monday morning and feedback has been left both ways already. One of the others has sent me a cheque which arrived this morning which means I can't now bank it until Monday so will probably end up sending her item out Monday morning before I even go to the bank, the last item remains unpaid so I'll give them until Monday morning and send a reminder.

I have been a buyer for a while, and am just going to sell our joint record collections on Ebay. Do I need to upgrade my paypal account. I am expecting the majority to only go for £1 or £2. So the 20p + 3.7% will make a big chunk in the money made. If I accept Paypal, can I realistically ask people to use a debit card? Or should I ask for checks or direct payments?Quidco cashback paid out so far £745.89 :j0

Hi Suewre,
It does not matter if they use a debit or credit card, you will still be charged the 3.4% and 20p per transaction. If your items are going to only sell for £1/2 each, it might be a good idea to sell them in groups i.e. all of the same artists LPs in one auction.
I have often sold a lot of low value items on the same day, and it is fair to say that although it may seem you loose a lot of the cash to Paypal, with P&P costs you still seem to get a nice final figure in your Paypal account. The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing:)0
