confidentiality when selling

Hi - Is there anyway of keeping your sale of your property private? so it doesnt appear on those websites that tell you how much the properties in certain area's go for?

  • I don't think you can stop your details going on websites like www.aboutmyplace.com unfortunately. I think there's some kind of Q&A or disclaimer on that one explaining why.

    This was one of many questions raised when the land registry started making the information available. It was decided that it wasn't a breach of the data protection act as the information was related to the property, not the buyer/seller.

    Though on ourproperty it gives you the name of the person who has bought the property, and sometimes the name of the person who has sold which I've always thought a bit odd.

    This information has always been in the public domain it is just the net that makes it so readily available. In the 'old days' you could just walk off the street into the Land Registry and look up the paper records.

    I find normally people blag a house sold for more than it does.

    or they say they've bought it for less than they did.
    Sometimes people don't want to share their income or affordability.

    You can normally work out what a house went for by looking at other houses in the area anyway so for me its abit pointless anyway to hide the sale value.
