depends on the car and what damage its done ie how many valves it bent to give you a guide i had a cambelt snap on a vw golf gti 16v about 6 years ago. It had full service history but the owner forgot to tell me he had missed the 80k belt change and i was younger back then and didnt think to ring the main dealer anyway it bent 15 of the 16 valves and cost me over £1k to put right

    I paid £100 for a new cambelt on a P reg Renault Megane 1.4.

It had not snapped and caused any damage though.

It was squeeling like mad on startup and was on its last legs.

Apparently on some cars it causes lots more damage if you tried to start the car after it went?

As other posters have said, it depends on how much damage has been done to the engine. If there is a lot of damage it might be cheaper to replace the engine with a second hand one.

    How old is the car?

looks like its not a 'safe' engine

in basic terms the cambelt connects the top and bottom of the engine and keeps them in timing so they run in the correct sequence
if it snaps they are out o time(the top half stops) and is struck by the bottom(pistons)
really the head(top bit) needs to come off or inspection for a quote

A quick poll among family and colleagues came up with anything from £380 to £1800.

The squeeling on start up is probably your fanbelt not the cambelt

Depending on car and year, a snapped cambelt can mean anything from repair cost of £200 to writing off the car (not economic to repair).
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.
