Christening present

How much would you spend on a Christening present for a friend's child.
I'm asking because I am giving money rather than a present and don't want to look too mean or too extravagant!

Thanks

  • Hi January

thats a hard one - do you know anyone else that is going that you could suss out how much they are spending on a present and give accordingly

i think money is a hard gift for the reasons you have given

i always give a terramundi jar with some £1coins in it to get the child into savings at an early age :)
  • You could always buy a savings bond, think they're £25 each from the post office.

Why not a £10 or £20 cheque, to go into the baby's Child Trust Fund?

Just had DS Christened. I was very happy for any gift, and I would have been happy with £5 or £10 but then I don't really believe in big gifts.

Cheques that were made out to him went into his bank account, cheques made out to us/payee left blank/cash went to Children's savings certificates. They can be cashed when he is 21 and will be a great boost for when he is starting out - much more help than a teddy bear.

If it is important to you, make sure that the parents will be saving safely for him with the money you give, or the children's savings certs start at £25. You could go in with another guest if you want to share the cost.
    Always another chapter

That's what I would go with - would go with £20 if it was a close friend's child.

I preferred when family gave monetary gifts for my DD - they all went in her trust fund. It will be more use to her in the future than for example, a teddy or an outfit.

That's what I'm thinking too that a monetary gift will be more useful to the child, especially as this child has already got everything they could possibly need and more!

£20 sounds good - I was afraid it wasn't going to be enough.

    Hi there

I would have said you are safe with £15-£20. Great idea for it to go into the childs trust fund! Teach them to save young!!!! :j
