OH Just let new plumber in and went back to work!

We had some plumbing trouble during the weekend and had to arrange for a plumber to come today to fix it.

I have just spoken to my boyfriend, who said that he has just gone home, let the plumber in and went back to work! He said that he had a chat with him and he seemed fine!

I can't believe it that he just met this guy for the first time, did not take references, did not see ID, and just left him with free reign in our home! Is this the done thing??? Plus, our cat is at home as well and she does not go outside - I am terrified he will let him out?

What are your thoughts - I work an hour away from home so cannot just come home... boyfried works 10 minutes walk away...

Not something I would do - I plan to take some time off work when I have the work done on the kitchen.

Even with references etc I'd still like someone to be in the house with them.

The vast majority of tradesmen are 100% honest and sometimes you just have to trust us.

Generally speaking we don't have the time to rifle through your knicker drawer, much as we might like to ;)

I agree with both the last two posts. I'd love to rifle thru, but dont get the time,:D :D . Only kidding.

You must remember that although you think you are leaving yourself wide open, it is actually us - the tradesman that is in danger here. You can make one false accusation, and thats our reputation and work gone in an instance
    and we can't prove otherwise.
Most tradesmen are very used to working in these situations and 99.9% would not dream- let alone dare, to do anything to put them selves in a dodgy position where there could be comeback.
Believe me, we have far more to lose then you do!

Surely all the secret filming done in 'Rogue trader' etc. on the telly shows what to expect? I imagine the tea will taste a bit funny for a while :(

The majority of tradesmen and women :D have taken years to build up thier reputation, and they are not going to lose it by stealing from someones house. all it takes is one thing, and thier long standing rep goes out the window.
I am speaking for the lone tradesperson, who mainly work by themselves, or a partnership, but I cannot speak for firms that employ other people who perhaps have only started with the firm that day.
But the chances of a lone plumber, electritian, carpenter, plasterer, painter etc knicking off you, would be very few and far between.
