It reminds me of when some of my pupils say,"Miss can I lend a pen?" , and I tell them I don't need to borrow one, as I have plenty(just for the hell of it):rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I think the OP is correct in their usage.

I remember being chased round a language lab with a bright orange french teacher shouting "I'll learn you".

And who was chasing you and the bright orange teacher?

    The OP could try this
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/french/
  • Just incase the op is wondering about what the other posters are talking about the title should read 'Teaching' rather than 'Learning'. You can not make someone learn, you can only teach them. HTH.

Oh for heavens sake - I'm so annoyed now! For your information I have an english degree and had I realised it would be such an issue I would have checked myself before submitting a thread. However, i was looking after a toddler and had just been looking at many 'learn a language' websites/threads, so it just came out. Many apologies - I hope you all got your kicks! There's nothing that winds me up more then when I see people jumping on people for grammar/spelling on this site - I didn't realise we were being tested. Oh and ps, I'm from a working class Yorkshire family and have been brought up with many sayings that may be 'grammatically incorrect' according to some - big deal.

And oldernotwiser - thanks for starting my thread off with a sarcastic, nasty comment. Please don't bother responding in future.

In case I wasn't clear enough - I admitted in my first post that I didn't have a clue. If I did why would I be asking for advice? I admitted that I had tried and failed. I was asking about dvds/clubs etc. Although I do have A's in french and german gcse's, unfortunately it has long since left my head!!

Thanks to everyone who gave advice rather then sticking the boot in. What a lot of bored, frustrated people we get on this forum. Maybe try a hobby rather then playing spot the mistake, eh? Sad. V sad.

I think its great that your child is learning to speak Spanish and French - I didnt learn anything until I went to Middle School. The primary school does seem a bit backward in offering French every two weeks or so. As a suggestion, perhaps you could borrow some language tapes from the library?

A chat with the nursery may also help because you never know the teacher might give private lessons or may suggest alternatives e.g. books etc.

    Good luck.

Would the primary school consider starting up a French and or Spanish club if enough children were interested?

You're right, it was tactless but I just thought that it was funny.:o

Regarding the above point, I never thought that anyone would try to teach a child a language that they didn't know themselves! Perhaps learning together would be the best approach.

You thought it was funny? What if it hadn't been a mistake and I was posting as someone not terribly well educated? If you think it's funny to try to humiliate someone on a public forum then I'd glad I haven't had the pleasure of your company in the real world, only the virtual one.

FYI I never suggested that I would be the one teaching. That's why I enquired about clubs or dvds. I never professed an interest in learning a language myself either so why would 'learning together be the best approach' as you so patronisingly put it.

    Please go away.

Thank you for this - I will enquire. I have spoken to the teacher who taught at the nursery and he does teach at other primary schools in the area, so I will suggest it to the head. The problem is that my little boy is at reception and his school doesn't run any clubs for that age group. I'm not sure why. I don't want him 'hothoused' but with languages I do believe that the earlier the better.

Thanks for your reply - I didn't start learning french and german until high school! No wonder it is so difficult. I have tried the local library but no joy. All they have are books, and try as I might, I can't really get the pronunciation and I don't want to pass on bad habits.
